do you think it does not fit to everybody?

I'm 58 and have worn short hair most of my life. It's not ridiculously short, but no one would ever describe it as anything BUT short. Truth is, if I thought I could get away with the hairstyle worn by the character on "Nurse Jackie," (a fabulous Showtime original series) I'd go that way. But I'm not quite that brave yet.
i have a short cut, but the front can be styled very nicely... since i have to wash and style my hair almost daily, this suits me well. A short cut can be done to fit your face. For instance my face is sort of round so my stylist leave hair on top that i can add height to it. It is only hair, try it, if you don't like it let it grow again.
If I had to grow my hair very long it would look more like big bird feathers all over my head.... Thanks but no thanks... I will keep mine short.
There is some reference made in the scriptures that calls a womans hair her crowning glory...Most people think this says we should all have long hair...... LOL I love long hair on some women.
I have straight as a board fine hair with no body. Long hair would not be my crowning glory. I would (and in the 60’s felt) like I looked like death warmed over. My hair also never grew longer than just above my shoulders so I could have never really had LONG hair. I am also a wash & wear kind of person. I need to wash it, brush it, let it dry( most of the time how it wants to go) and get on with my life. I have never thought that spending 1-2 hours on my hair was a good use of my time. I have a hard enough time sitting still long enough to have a haircut.
I also think it is OK for the world to have several different sizes and styles of crowns to choose from. LOL
As you can see I have a boy cut and just love it ! Wash and wear hair. Try some very short wigs, might just help you a make a choice. Hope this helps.
As my pic too shows I have sported a short cut since 99. I have not used a blow dryer since then, one suggestion Herbal Essence puts out a great light weight yet strong hold spray hair gel -Shower, spray, comb and DONE!!!
But, and this is important - a short cut HAS to be re-cut every 6-8 weeks, this is a must otherwise you will look sloppy and thats not the goal.
Do it! If you decide you don't like it it grows back anyway.
thank you all, I will cut my hair
Excellent! Do it. I had short hair for many years and the last 3-4 it's been about shoulder length, layered and letting my natural curl that I always fought take over. I never knew my hair would curl like it does, but with products now it's very easy to maintain. I thought I had just enough wave to be annoying. I love a punky short haircut. Had it in the 80's and loved it. Don't know if I could still pull it off. I'm happy with my hair as it's long enough to put up with a clip when it's hot and when I go to the gym.
Short cuts can be very chic, and in general, women over 50 should keep their hair chin length or above, as longer can drag the face down, unless you've had it lifted, of course. I had super long as a young woman (60s era), and have had every length since then, mostly short the last few years. Your face and body shape will dictate the type of style you shoul go for, i.e., a head that looks tiny on a plus-sized body, is usually not a good look. Check out magazines for cuts you like, consider trying on short wigs, and most important, go to a very good stylist. And, remember, it will grow back if you don't like it. Have fun with your new look.
Don't do anything rash right away...you could end up crying for two weeks! Ask a hairstylist who can suggest the correct cut to go with the shape of your face. Not every face is meant for uber short hair. It may look fantastic on Jamie Lee Curtis...but it's not for all of us!
That said, there are plenty of short styles to go with and I'm sure you'll find one that works best for you.
I had short, short hair for many years...loved it for the most part, then I grew tired of it.
Hi Grace....I have short hair (have for many years)....I really don't think short is for everybody but if you go find a wig store, try some on and see how you like it. If you do, there are alotta sites online for short hair styles...take a picture with you when/if you go short. Be realistic and understand that alot of it also depends on your hair type (for the style)....Good Luck!!....K
Hi, Could you let me know some of those posts? Thanks.
I've had short, I mean teeny weeny curling iron short for years. So much easier to care for, and unless you have a really big face it usually works well. Now if you dye your hair, you will have to dye it twice as often, those roots will be showing in no time with a short cut. A couple sites have that try on a hairstyle thing you might want to check out.
Short hair are great, as long as you don't have to dye it every 3 weeks. Unfortunately, the roots tends to show too fast. So I keep mine a bit longer.
If you part your hair roots show and around the hairline is a giveaway also regardless of the length
I wore my hair super short during my office years but now it's very long for the very reason you stated: keeping the color going! However, I purchased many fun clips and bands and have learned to wear it in many attractive up styles without looking dowdy. I twist and braid and curl the ends and knot and wrap. It's so much fun and it's easy. And I don't have to worry about the color as much. I only color the roots which just takes a few minutes and I use an old toothbrush. I never wear it down because I don't look well at my age with long hanging hair. Some can manage that look at any age but I'm not one of them!
I've had a fairly short bob for several years, and I get compliments about it all the time. About 2 years ago I got a "wild hair" and decided to go super short... it was a disaster. It really wasn't very flattering, I think it made me look 10 years older, so I couldn't wait for it to grow out! I'll stick with my short bob.
John Frieda once told me the way to tell if you'll look good with short hair is to ask yourself three questions.
1. Do you look great/ feel beautiful straight out of shower or pool with your hair away from your face ?
2 Do you have a good profile with a long neck and defined jawline ?
3. Do you always pull your hair back into a ponytail ?
If the answer is yes to all three, go for it. You have the confidence, sexy attitude and proportions to pull it off.
As a stylist/ colorist/ educator, I've met most of the "big names' in the beauty industry. Not one will agree with the other and will offer a different solution. I tend to agree with some of what John says but most rules of thumb are generalities and we block our creativity and chance to be daring when we play by the rules. I personally think the best way to see how you will look is to try on a wig.
I love short hair, and would do it today....But, I have none of the "look good with short hair " points you mention above. I make due with layering my straight fine blond hair with length a little longer in front for a longer hair look around my aging chin and neck, and shorter in the back for the shorter hair feel (especially when I am hot!) But it is not too geometric and neat like alot are doing these days, I like it chopped up and messy.....=]
I have a boy hair cut and and men and women complement me! And I'm heavy
I've had short hair most of my life. Right now, I'd classify it as "medium short." I have natural waves at the end, so leave it longer in the back and some long "sideburns" that flip up and make it look a bit longer. It's really very versatile! Sometimes, when I'm feeling sassy, I'll put a lot of product in it (a paste made by Garnier) and spike it all over. Have had lots of compliments. If I ever let it go longer, it would be to a medium bob.
I think short hair is a lot more work. I have curly/wavy thick hair, and if it's short it takes way more time and attention to keep it in order, whereas when it's longer it kind of weighs itself down and also can be just tucked back in a ponytal or braid or pinned up in seconds.
I totally agree. I understand the whole wash and wear hair for some folks means short but wash and wear for me with my curls means a little longer. I wore my hair very short for a long time but with curls that meant messing with it every day and getting it cut every four weeks, which I just couldn't afford. Now my hair is about chin length and it can be curly if I leave it alone or wavy if I comb it. I seldom use a hair dryer and when I do it is for five minutes or less. For a curly girl wash and wear often means a little longer. If I were to go short again it would have to be REALLY short - I'm talkin' maybe an inch.
I've had short hair since third grade and never regretted it. (Oh there was that period in high school when I grew it out for the boys). But wash and wear hair has been my "trademark" cut. As said before, find a good stylist who knows what they are doing. I haven't yet met a stylist that did not enjoy the opportunity to cut hair really short. As also mentioned, it's importatnt to keep that 5-7 week appointment --depending on how fast your hair grows. I've even had my short hair colored, but that increases the bill significantly and at a certain point, I wanted to know my hair color.
I had the same idea but was not convinced so I bought an inexpensive wig and tried it out first. Looked good but
I found out that if your hair is not just right for a short cut - it can be a pain to keep up. More salon time and growing out is bad hair day after bad hair day.
I am a short-haired redheaded Peaceful Woman and I love it....it's so easy, so fun, and if you have a YES inside, I say listen and go for it!
When I decided not to color my hair any longer, I had it cut off extremely short (I have straight hair) and I spiked it a bit at the top back and in front (b/c I had no bangs!). I've never had so many nice compliments about my hairstyle as I got when it was very short like that. I wore it that way for about six years and today my hair is just below my ear and I'm wearing it more one-length and flipped out behind my ears (with some light bangs). The bottomline for me is if I feel confident about how good my hair looks, then I feel I can carry off any style I want. If you're playing with the idea of going really short and you feel led to chop it off, I say - GO FOR IT! You can always let it grow back out again if you don't like it as well as you thought you would. It's only hair :)
After 31 years of raising kids and working part-time here and there, I started a full-time job. I needed to free up time where ever I could simply because I didn't want my other activities to suffer my time constraint. New job warranted a new do, a very short hairdo. I can not begin to tell you the ease of my new haircut. I am up at 4 and out the door by 4:45 and washing and styling is easy and takes only about 5 minutes. I have gotten more compliments on this haircut from friends and strangers. I love it. People I know have done a double take because they did not recognize me. Even young men have complimented me on my hair. It makes me look 10 years younger and I feel younger. Try the short hair. Work with your hairstylist in selecting a style that will compliment your facial features and don't be afraid to add some fun color; if you don't like it the hair will grow back and the color can always be changed.
I had a short hairstyle for nearly 25 years when I decided to grow my hair longer. I soon realized that longer hair made me look older. I'll keep my hair short from now on.
Hello - on the subject of hair. Has anyone heard of Interlink (at least I think that is what it is called). A stylist will actually bond three or four strands of synthetic hair to a strand of your natural hair. My hair is getting a "little" thin here and there - and I'm looking for more body !!
Thanks
I cut my hair in a pixie cut last summer. It was down to my shoulders before that. I was spending 1/3 of my time caring for my Mom...living in 2 places a once. My husband and my cat got short shrift, and so did I! This simple change was a real boost. I love it this way. A desperation measure became an expression of personal style.
Go for it!
A few years ago, it was a difficult decision to cut my hair very short, but once I did it, I never had it long again.
At 63 I feel and look younger, it's very easy to take care of it. Go for it!
I have just read most of the posts and I agree with all of the women who said "Go For It!"... It does grow back and if you have that inner voice that is suggesting you try it... why not? I love short hair... Two of my childhood friends (both female) prefer me in longer hair... that is nice... but I prefer how I feel and look with short hair...but really the most imp. reason I prefer it shorter is the low low maintenance... I am also 52 now so I suppose that the plus of having it help to make me look younger is another factor... but really, the #1 reason is the ease... I can jump out of shower and dress and leave the house... and look mostly "put together"... For my 50th BD, 2 GF's gave me a blow dryer! lol I used it twice so far....If you do get it cut short, please post and let us all know how you like it, ok??
I think it depends on you. You have to think about how you're going to feel in a short hair cut. I am VERY picky about my hair and have worn variations of a bob for years. The last time I had my hair short was in the 80's-- what a huge mistake for me! I have a 'wicked witch of the west' chin and I totally dislike my hair (in front) shorter than my chin. In fact, my stylist, whom I love, recently cut it a little shorter than I like-- has to be even or longer than my pointy chin (I don't have a wart though!) I do wear it very short in the back-- a tapered bob-- especially in the summer. So, I like the wig idea-- go try some on or find one of those websites where you can put your face on different hairstyles. (Althought the wig will give you a better feel for it!)
I have had short hear all my adult life. At 53, it gives me a fun and sassy feeling. Highlights work well with short hair. Also there are so many fun products to use on hair to make many different styles. Go for it ! It might just set you free!!
I just got out a lot of old photos with different cuts and styles...I asked a bunch of friends which one looked good then I took those photos to my hair stylist and guess what we all agreed on a short ear length layered look which kind of curls at the back as I have natural curly hair...so great and yes I do look like 10years younger yahooo....more perky and with it...
Here is my new cut and it works great and so easy
I like your haircut! I have worn my hair very short most of my life but recently have let it grow in a little since I had it colored and high-lighted. My hair is now about the same length as yours. I'm 71,,,,heading for 72 this summer. I'm letting my gray grown in,,,,at least that's my objective at the moment - lol! If I start not liking it, I'll likely keep having it high and low-lighted to keep it close to what it currently is. Right now, the overall color is similar to yours but it was almost black when I was young. The past few years, I kept going lighter until I became a strawberry blond and have never had so many compliments in my life,,,,I have a redhead's complexion (according to the makeup experts) and that's why the red colors look so good but it isn't red now and I feel more like my "old self" - lol! We certainly do have fun with our hair, don't we?
Short, long, straight, curly, color treated or virgin; hair frames the face. A not so perfect painting in an elegant frame will look better. On the other hand, a chipped and lopsided frame on an elegant painting does not work at all. So however you choose to wear your hair, wear it the best you can. Do not let it wear you.
I love all of the responses; I am an entertainer, dancer and singer; my husband and i do shows together. I have been in performing arts all of my life, so I still wear my hair below shoulder length; my hair is fine; I like it long because i do different things with my hair--pull it back in low ponytail, french braid, up with a pretty comb clip; when I wear it down it takes more maintenance; when I wear it up, it gives the illusion of short hair, so I feel i have the best of both worlds; sometimes i am tempted to cut it because most of my friends wear thei hair short; I just feel better with long hair; I have had shorter hair and it required MORE maintenance than when it is long. So whatever feels right for you, do it. Actually I feel younger with longer hair and I will be 65 in June. So every one is different. thanks for all of your responses.
I used to have shoulder length hair 2 weeks ago and straight and could make it messy and curly but it did take time to straighten it. The more I put it up with combs etc the more people would say oh you look good with your hair up...so now all i do is blow dry forward , scrunch the back and put in some gooey junk and presto
The big key is to know how your hair manages. As you said it takes longer for short hair for you....whatever works right!!!
Also creampuff they say here on VN that as we get older lighter hair than our natural color softens things and added highlights makes it more interesting...I am Metis descent and have no grey at all at age 58 but still add color as hair gets dull and color adds shine
So much fun and hair grows...
Wow! no gray hair at 58! Fantastic! But as you say, the darker hair does tend to get dull as we get older and coloring and hi-lighting boosts the color and gives more texture to the hair instead of it looking flat. I'm English/Irish descent and guess I have what is called the "black Irish" look of very dark hair and very fair complexion. My mother-in-law was Irish and a redhead and we wore the same shade of makeup. One time we were trying on wigs and she told me I looked better with "her" red hair than in my own almost black hair .
I used to have very straight hair but during the past 15 years, I've gradually developed wave and then actual curls in my hair except for the front and sides,,,,wouldn't you know! So I use shampoos and products to enhance the curls and have a cut that is shorter at the sides, flowing into the back. I just use product and use my hands to put my hair in place and let it air dry. You can't get simpler than that! I'm finding that the longer hair (compared to my former super short) is much easier to maintaiin. And wish a very short cut, I HAS to be perfect,,,,,and not that many hairdressers are really all that great at cutting. I also like my hair at least partly razor cut and at least where I live, for a while I couldn't even find anyone who cut with a razor until the razor cut started making a comeback, thank goodness!
Isn't it amazing how much time we women spend on our hair? Not just actually washing and styling, but the time we spend deciding whether to go short or long, which style, which color, etc. But it makes such a difference in how we look and in how we feel about ourselves.
Yes Creampuff I totally agree!!
A caucasion, naturally dark haired person, most times will have olive or 'sallow' skin tone that would never allow 'going blonde'. However as you grey, your skin tone in most cases will lighten to compliment the lack of pigment in your once dark hair; an act of kindness from nature. When that happens becoming a blonde is very becoming. So make sure you try on a few wigs in different shades of blonde. Ash, golden, even highlighted, light or dark. Bet you will be surprized how good you look. Don't forget to soften your make-up to create the absolute best look.
If you are more than 50% white stay away from red. It is a chore to achieve without looking pink or orange, and a pain to maintain as it fades more quickly than other colors and in my opinion 'scary' to look at as the new growth (roots) grow in and show. Great options are always available to help us look younger and more beautiful. Be daring but be sensible in your choices.
I am a 55 year old woman with white/silver hair. I have had a short short cut for many years. It takes about 30 seconds to blowdry it and another 30 seconds to gel it for spiking. I get many compliments and many ladies have asked for my cosmetologists name. You will love it!!!!!
You are blessed to have white/silver hair. Most greyheads often have a yellowish cast. Wear it proudly. Nothing is more beautiful than silver hair, cut in a youthful style on a 55 year young woman.
would love to see your picture! hair sounds great! Show us , please!!!!
Hi Grace,
It's been many months now. What kind of haricut did you get? How are you liking it?
Thank you to all the comments here. For the first time in about 25 years, I got bangs and went with a bit shorter cut. I have received such positive comments, mainly that I look younger. I appreciate all of you giving me the courage to finally make this change!
