what did you do with the rings?
posted 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

My wedding ring is sitting in the jewelry box just waiting. My engagement ring, which was very non-traditonal, really more of a diamond (small, very small, we were in grad school) cocktail ring went to my daughter. She asked for it. I think as a reminder of where she had come from...the love that had been between her parents. I'm not sure. She wanted it. I didn't and I trust her to take care of it. Where are yours?

My engagement ring from my first marriage is sitting in a safety deposit box. One of these days, I'll probably take it to a jeweler to get it reset into another ring, or maybe a necklace. My current wedding ring is a simple gold band.

my oldest son had my original wedding rings reset and his wife loves wearing them.  I'm thrilled for her to wear them.  They were redesigned but only slightly.

I do own a gold band from my present marriage but wear a full set of wedding rings with a substantial diamond that came from my mother.  They belonged technically to my younger sister and sat in a jewelry box for 10 years.   So she gave them to me to have resized.  It was a shame not having that substantial diamond worn.  So I wear the diamond ring, both my mothers narrow gold wedding bands, as well as my own gold band all on one finger.

Our first gold wedding bands were melted down (in a fit of anger) and made into gold nuggets.  One of them I gave to a daughter.  The other one I sold to buy Christmas presents for his kids (I was furious).  The engagement ring diamonds were put into a dinner ring that I gave the other daughter.  After we patched things up I really wasn't sorry for what I did.  But he was sorry for what caused the riff.  So when we knew we had worked through the rough patches he bought me a gorgeous wedding ring and I usually only wear it on special occasions.  I'm afraid someone will rip my finger off trying to take it.

Ohhh, it must be very beautiful.

NormaJeanne said to dynamomma 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

I like this response.  I have a friend, who, after her husband left her, took all the jewellery he ever gave to her (quite a few pieces, I might add!) and brought them to a jewellery designer, who incorporated ALL of the precious metal and gemstones into a gorgeous bracelet--truly one of a kind!  Why give the ex the satisfaction of beautiful things not being used!

My first was a simple gold band.  Don't know what happened to it.  My husband of 37yrs gave me a set with a small diamond.  The diamond was lost and we had it replaced.  Then on our 25th anniversary, he gave me a new set witha 1/4 carat and 4 small diamonds for our 4 children. I wear it every day.

My first engagement ring had a prong broken on it and so it was in my jewelry box when we were robed along with my vacuum cleaner and some plants… funny thing that same week end my up-stairs neighbor got a new/used vacuum that had the same rattle in it. I could hear it every time she cleaned her floors and she also came up with a new ring a week later, my diamond and a new setting. But I couldn’t prove it was mine. I really wasn’t that upset that I didn’t have it anymore. I never have liked diamonds and had told him before we married that I didnt want one...he didnt listen. But the wedding bands from my first marriage were Zuni silver & turquoise Wedding bands. My Ex ‘lost’ his at work and because I was young and very insecure I let him wear mine. I have large hands he has small….LOL He lost that one, at work, within a month of letting him start to wear it.

When Gil and I got married I made our bands out of silver. I have had to resize his up once. When Gil asked if I wanted a diamond engagement ring I told him NO WAY…. At least he listened to me.

I sent my ring (wide 18 carat white gold band) back to my first husband. He gave it to me. I gave it back.

The jeweler designed a beautiful necklace with the diamonds from my engagement and wedding rings.  A few year's later, my daughter needed a security deposit for a new apartment so I replaced the 1 carat center stone with a cubic zircona and sold the diamond.  I was happy it went for a good cause - and the cubic zircona is such a high quality even the jeweler said he'd have a hard time telling the difference.

I had the stones reset into a pendant, and it is now a necklace.

My daughter wanted it, so give it to her. First husbands ring, sold it, party over!

My first husband's ring, sold it to a pawn shop. Didn't get much for the ring...didn't get much from the marriage. (Well except for my beautiful daughter.)

sja said to joyful53 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

The first "wedding" ring was Onyx and silver and fell apart, his Mom's large diamand engagement and wedding ring were passed on to me after her death,  Dave's Grandfather was a jeweler.   I wore it just as it was, the ring was European cut and beutiful.   After I was widowed I passed on all the family hierlooms rings to his children.  All 3 daughter-in-laws are now wearing family rings.   I continure to wear my wedding ring on my right hand.

I had no problem seeling them to a coin and used jewelry store.

katwilly said to joyful53 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

Had the diamonds from engagement ring/pendant set made into earrings; made a necklace from the 10th anniversary ring; pawned the leftover gold and his wedding ring. The diamonds will go to my daughter someday, when I'm sure HER ex won't be able to get hold of them! My second husband gave me much simpler rings, but beautiful antique ones - and they're more precious than the fancy ones my 1st husband bought.

He asked for it back.  I don't think so.

I sold that puppy the minute I got the chance.  Did not want any reminders of the clown who gave it to me.

anir said to joyful53 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

Gave it back.   He can put it where the sun don't shine!  It would be with what my relationship with him was.

Did I write that?!?

I didn't have one. The man I married had an oft-used tirade about blood diamonds and said that "American women are being sold a bill of goods by the diamond cartel" every time the subject came up. What I thought or wanted wasn't part of the equation. I felt guilty for wanting a ring of any kind.

I seem to have put that own guilt on myself (the blood diamond part, not the ring part)...not that anyone's offering diamonds right now. How awful to feel that what you thought or wanted wasn't part of the equation.  I'm so sorry.

SeaWriter said to joyful53 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

Thanks for the kind thought, joyful53. It was no picnic.

I wear a beautiful diamond on my right hand that has come down in our family on my mother's side, oldest daughter to oldest daughter. I'm the third generation to be custodian of the stone. It holds lovely memories and connections for me and I'm honored to wear it. I'll pass it along to the older of my two daughters one of these days.

I was naive and didn't realize that gold was saleable, so I searched for the dirtiest, smelliest dumpster and threw the weddiing band into it.  Because my engagement ring was unusual and noteworthy, I didn't want to see my daughter wearing it.  So, it became a very much appreciated graduation present for a granddaughter who lives in Alaska

it has three diamond bands.   I was going to give the largest to my daughter and the two smaller to my sons for their future wife, but my daughter pointed out that the ring had "bad karma" because the marriaged ended in such a disaster.  so next on my list/.. it will soom be grocery money

Gramma said to joyful53 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

well, still married, so still wear my rings.....but, actually , not the ones I originally received from my darling husband.  I love my original set of one beautiful quality diamond ( larger than 1/4, smaller than 1/2)  in a gold band with scrolling, and the band with the same scrolling.   I did have them off for a while years ago when pregnant, and then thieves disguised as realtors stole them from our home when our house was up for sale.  Thankfully, they caught the thieves and I found the rings at the police dept.  Sized them a couple of times.....Then, my husband gave me another original diamond ring for our twentieth that I wore with my band for a while...Now it is on my right hand...I got an anniversary diamond band for our 25th and loved it with the original set.  But, my husband had other thoughts and soon gave me a beautiful one carat, for my 5oth birthday.  He picked one with three diamonds to commemorate yesterday , today, and forever.  Sometimes , he really surprises me....=]  So, now the original set sits in a box, sometimes I wear it, but mostly , I would love to give it to my son to use, if he ever finds a girl he would love to marry....

Oh, and I forgot,....my two adult children gave me another ring  a couple of years ago that I wear with my now wedding set.  It is a band with sapphires (my birthstone and my son's) and diamonds (my daughters birthstone).  So it is a combination mother's ring and birthstone ring for me.....So sweet of them...=]

In my first date after our last separation that was the end I gave it to him, and my compromise ring broke when I was washing something, it was so little but I loved it.

Very good question--I have the original which was upgraded at our 10th anniversary and another beaut I got for our 25th (by the 27th he was sleeping with Elmira-I call her this because he played the tinman in his 8th grade play--never marry a tinman)I can't decided whether to sell them and make a memory with the money or reset the diamonds and enjoy them....don't feel like handing them down for fear they are full of bad karma....

joyful53 said to actionspeak 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

I don't know why I can't sell the simple band for the money...so it sits there.  Meanwhile on my right hand I wear a pearl ring I bought for my 50th - a month after he left.  While we were in the throws of breaking up I had a dream that I swallowed a pearl and the pearl filled me with a white light that was strength and wisdom.  Sooooo I bought myself a pearl (and knowing the story, my friends showered me with pearls for my birthday as well). Interestingly it is similiar in style to my engagement ring.  I like to think of it as continuity.  As painful as that whole experience was it did help form me into the strong woman I am now. I learned so much about loving during the good years, lessons which I am taking into my future, that I am grateful for 31and a half of the 32 years.

The painful parts made me love myself even more (when I lived through them) If I had a simple band I probably would not sell it...not because of any sentimental reasons but because of the "full circle" it symbolizes. Salud to you and your future.

my origianl wedding ring was stolen.  Therefore, my current wedding ring was purchased with insurance money.  My STBX is claiming it was not a gift, but community property.  It's a fancy one with 21 diamonds.  I have a fantasy of throwing it at him at the mediation

Sharryc said to enjoying new life 02/06/2010, 01:14AM new!

That ring is yours.  Do not throw it in his face.  That can be some security to have for the future, when you really need the money.  Years and years ago, I was engaged to a guy who turned out to be a SUPER JERK, and when I finally got smart and broke it off, I stupidly gave it back to him.  ver since I have regretted that I did.  And many others have told me what a mistake I made.  If it was given to you, it is yours to keep.  Even tho replaced by insurance, it is yours!!!  Don't let him tell you otherwise.
