Quest for perfect foundation
posted 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I am barely 60, fair skin (with some ruddiness) and blonde hair and eyebrows. I am on a desperate search for the perfect foundation that doesn't look like  mask. Have considered minerals, but reviews for mature women are very mixed. Anyone have suggestions?

Morning, I am 60 yrs young and wear minerals foundation, blush and eyeshadows. To me just wonderful. I found a lady on ebay that would mix my minerals to my skin tone, using her for the last 3-4 yrs. If interested let me know.

paintgram said to TRACK 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I would be very interested in learning more about this, do the minerals have paraben in them?

susanpariseau said to TRACK 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I am interested but don't know if this is the solution to my  dilema.  I have tried bare minerals and others like that in the past it seems to highlight every wrinkle and fine line I have.  I don't know what to do at this point.  I did purchase something and am delighted that it works.  I bought Youthology for the bags under my eyes and as advertised in 60-90 seconds the bags are shrunk completely.  I was amazed and thrilled because they made me look and feel so much older.  Suggestions are more than welcome.

Tamara said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

One of my favorite foundations for older skin was made by Revlon...but they've discontinued it and replaced it with something called Age Defying Spa foundation. It's not bad, just use it sparingly. The coverage appears fairly natural, as long as you don't put too much on!

One foundation that I thought I'd love, but hate is Cover Girl & Olay Simply Ageless  (the one Ellen DeGeneres touts in the commercials). It goes on very cakey and does exactly what it claims not to do: settle into facial lines and wrinkles! This is just my experience, others may like it!

Sharryc said to Tamara 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I found the same results with that Cover Girl.  HATED IT!

Tamara said to Sharryc 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Now the blush isn't too bad...seems smoother for some reason.

Laurie said to Tamara 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I've had the same experience - threw the darn thing in the back of the drawer - soon to go in the garbage. This stuff is awful and makes my skin, which isn't great anyway, look terrible.

Aries32650 said to Tamara 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

i agree about the Cover Cirl & Olay Simply Ageless.  What a waste of my money!

NOT ANTHING like as advertised.  Darn it.  I use bare minerals, but I am still on the quest of a great foundation.

susanpariseau said to Tamara 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I tried the foundation Ellen DeGeneres advertised and was very dissatisfied with it as well.  It caked on and as Tamara said it maked my fine lines and wrinkles more visible.

Tried it too. Not satisfied as the color made me look ghostly not to metnion how it caked on. Still looking.

Storytaker said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Tuck,

I have always wanted to have that 'finished' foundation look that you see on some women - not heavily made-up but 'lookin good!'.  No matter what I've tried, I never get it!  That '60' stone is right around the corner for me and I would like to look polished - at least once without the undertaker doing it - in make-up.  I have shied away from the minerals also, mostly because my skin is fair and very sensitive and don't want to show more wrinkles.  Thanks for posting this - even though I can't help you I will be interested in what everyone suggests.  Here's to our new look! :)

SeaWriter said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Your coloring sounds very similar to mine. I find that once I add a foundation, it can remove any color at all from my complexion, and then I have to add blush to look alive. I really have to choose foundations carefully. Right now I'm using one I buy at a health food store from a German company called Lavera (the foundation is called Trend sensitiv), a stick blush from Jane Iredale, and a finishing powder called Meteorites by Guerlain. I also use a serum primer, by the way, called Photo Finish from Smash Box, which fills in pores and tiny wrinkles before the makeup goes on.

I have found that the best thing I can do for my makeup is make sure my skin is in excellent condition underneath it so that everything goes on smoothly and doesn't cake. I pay a lot of attention to my skin.

2melifeisgood said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

As another who is pushing 60...well I'll be 57 in 2 weeks, but am practicing saying 60 cuz, well, I need to get used to it cuz those 3 years will fly by! ;-)

I have been using DUAL FINISH face powder from Lancome for at least 10 years..... a bit pricey,  BUT wait...got a tip if you'd like to try it. Go to your local department store that sells Lancome and have one of their make up artists pick the right shade for you and put it on you. Wear it for the day and see how you like it...either go back there and purchase it OR....(confession), buy it on EBAY, like I've done for years and you'll pay much less. It never cakes, settles in those tiny lines etc. It has that nice finished look. I use a big brush to lightly brush over my whole face! Try it....you just might like it! :-)

susanpariseau said to 2melifeisgood 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

this sounds perfect for me.  I have trouble figuring out what shade is right for me.  I have fair skin but an olive tone to it as well.  I always pick the wrong shade and need the guidance.  What department store did you find the reps at and that will give me a place to start?  Thank you.

I use Bobbie Brown's tinted moisturizer and then a little bronzing powder on my forehead, down length of nose, on chin and a little on my neck and of course a little blush.  I apply the tm with my fingers for a light coating and with a foundation brush for a heavier coat. I like to go to the department store makeup counter of BB once a year to learn about the new what to's and how to's. My skin has basically been normal, I was not a foundation woman..as I've gotten older I have developed some ruddiness too and am wearing this tm when I want a smooth look.  Good luck on your search!

Shoppergal said to Mimi6 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Absolutely, Bobbi Brown wonderful. Great natural shades a well.

susanpariseau said to Mimi6 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I just moved to PTC, GA and I am still looking around for a department store that has someone to show me what foundation color is good for me and how to apply the make up to make my skin look even and not look like a mask.  I haven't worn makeup in years and it hasn't been pretty when I have tried to do it myself lately.  Guidance would be a good thing for me.  What stores provide this, I am really lost.

Shoppergal said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Try Bobbi Brown products (liquids) - in department stores (Macys). Outstanding products for aging skin. I love it. Great anti-aging lipstick, skin care as well.

My skin and coloring are similar - suggest looking at Laura Mercier...great foundations if you get a match  or her Tinted Moisturizer..also you can never go wrong with Clinique...Superfit.

i never had luck with Bobbi Brown..was yellowish... I'd say no on mineral powders...

I appreciate the input I am going to Sacs for a Makeup lesson and hopefully can find out what is the right color for my skin, from there I think I can figure out the rest.  Looking forward to it though, wearing makeup is something I haven't done in years.  I have lost 110 lbs and am thinner than I have been since H.S.  Am healthier than I have ever been.  Have purchased a whole new wardrobe my latest at Cold Water Creek here in town.  I am going to get a manicure and would like to have my face look as nice as the rest.  Off to my nieces wedding in March so I have time to learn the art of putting on make up.  Going on a cruise in Jan 2011.  I am so happy, I could bust.  GOD Bless.

I am headed to Macy's so that I can learn the art of wearing make up at 51 almost 52.  Thank you.  I am batteling dry skin as well due to the medication I take for an overactive bladder.  Hopefully they can help me find a good lotion to wear under make up as well.  Thank you.

Mary Kay products match skin color & tone.  It will cover the ruddiness, and is formulated for oily or dry skin.  It is only $14, and lasts for months.  It is also 100% guaranteed that you will like it.  Well worth a try.

If it were Mary Kay, and for some crazy reason you didn't like it, you could exchange or return it for a full refund!

Here's a way to get rid of your new and/or "used" (fresh and like-new) makeup and skincare products and try others.

Several years ago on another site, we had a MakeUp Club where a box of makeup made its rounds among a selected group of members. When you received the box, you would take whatever you wished and then add your leftovers and send the box to the next woman on the list. It was fun. Of course used lipsticks and mascaras were not permitted.

You might also share "The Box" only among your friends.

Have fun.

Has anyone tried Mac?  Just wondered.

Jwin said to Storytaker 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I have tried Mac and it is good.  Personally I like Bobbi Brown a little better.  The very best has been a custom blended foundation made by a "Preston Wynne" spa.  (A lot of places will do this for you)The custom blend can be made with the right amount of moisture, anti-aging compounds and exact right color for you.  They also add your sun block if you like.

Storytaker said to Jwin 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I never heard of Bobbie Brown before reading on this post!  Guess I'm a little behind the times.

lenora said to Storytaker 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

i have been using MAC lately. i love the lipsticks.also have their lip primer- i have trouble keeping the lipstick on my lips and it helps alot.i have a tube of concealer from them. i noticed last yr after a few horrific months of stress that my eye concealer was really looking pasty on my skin. i knew it was from stress making my eyes look tired ,not the product. the MAC people showed me a brush that you use to feather the concealer out, using it in in a small circular motion, which really does make it look better. i have not bought other products from them yet. i don't have a loyalty to one brand at all.but i do feel that they are very professional in their presentation and understanding of makeup.

lenora said to lenora 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

i forgot to say that i also use MAC powder foundation.my skin is oily even at 51,so i have to be careful of foundations.you can put it on with the sponge dry or wet, depending on the look you ant.i am freckly and i just like to even the skin out a little, not cover the freckles.it works well, and stays put.it is oil free.

Bare Escentials (at Sephora or QVC)...the best!!!!

only if you are young or have oily skin

susanpariseau said to sunflower1912 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

have tried this too and the same trouble with fine lines and wrinkles even with a lotion base.

sunflower1912 said to susanpariseau 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I'm 53 so I'm not young ;-(   You may be putting too much on or using too much moisturizer.  I've been using it for years and it has worked great for me.  Another trick...use a primer, helps to keep any foundation from settling.

Lynnette said to sunflower1912 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

which primer?  I wonder if the one that was suggested on a u tube site for the eyeshadow could serve just as well for the face.

Happy to report that i bought the DREAM matte mousse from Maybelline and received excellent reviews from my friends at a party last night.  Even the men said something.  so thank u ladies, I JUST LOVE THIS SITE!  You ladies share the best secrets.

sunflower1912 said to sunflower1912 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I use Serious Skin Care "ester-C primer" but Smashbox primer or Laura Geller are both good too....gives your skin a light silky texture. I don't know about using it on the eyes.  I'll try it & let you know.

Bad Kitty! said to sunflower1912 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Get thee to Sephora! Especially in the morning when the usually excellent staff have more time to help you find the right Bare Escentuals  (BE) shade for you (I mix 2 shades, and adjust portions seasonally). I skip the BE "moisturizer" that came with the introductory BE kit. Instead, I discovered Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.

I'm 51, I work 12-hour shifts as an RN, I work 7-8 shifts every 2 weeks. I want makeup to last and stay put (I do not want to look like I need the gurney more than my patients!)! The Clarins Beauty Flash Balm goes on slightly thick (follow directions), apply to face and neck; soaks into your skin, and helps the BE stay in place.

After I apply the Clarins BFB, I use a small pea size amount of Lancome Effecernes on a slightly damp (I don't mean wet) makeup sponge (pack of latex free sponges at the supermarket; start with a fresh sponge each week, or more often), to gently dab under my eyes and to cover any spots.

Then I use a BIG Sephora powder brush (BE comes with brushes, I just prefer the big brush I use) to apply the BE. Use a slightly smaller brush to apply some blush (I think I might experiment with the "blush first" suggestion by another writer).

That's it! Lasts 12 hrs. To undo all this I wash face and neck with St Ives gentle apricot scrub almost daily. I use either Lancome or Clairins moisturizer on face and throat, before I collapse in bed.

BTW, I've used almost all the products discussed on this thread, and for the most part, all are pretty good.

One last comment, stress - real or imagined, lack of sleep, trying to be Super Woman (or trying to be all things to all people), not hydrating, and not laughing enough and often, are detrimental to more than just our exteriors.

I really enjoy reading everyone's comments, and value your advice, thoughts, enthusiasms. Be well.

I use a tinted moisturizer (Boots at Target is good) and then a mineral foundation over my problem spots.  I suffer from rosacea with very ruddy cheeks and I have large pores on my nose which doesn't do well with foundation.  It is so complicated isn't it?

Char1960 said to joyful53 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

The large pores come from the rosacea...caused by congestion of the underlying skin.  I am using metrogel topically and have noticed an AMAZING difference in 2 months of use.  It's a prescription unless you use an out-of-the-country pharmacy.

ann b said to Char1960 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I have rosacea also and am wondering why the metrogel is so expensive.  Am hoping medicare prescription coverage I chose will make it less expensive.  Does anyone know of another product that is good for rosacea.

Char1960 said to ann b 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Ann,

It's considered a "dermatology" agent, therefore, expensive.  You can get it at a fraction of the price from international pharmacies.  Other places in the world don't even require a prescription  Only here in the USA with Big Pharm.

ann b said to Char1960 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Do you use an international pharmacy?

Marimart said to ann b 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

It's so expensive because there isn't a generic available - yet.  As a result I've learned to be very stingy in my use of it.  I'm only using 1x a day - and it is working to keep my skin from progressing with rosacea.  It's actually cleared my nose.  My dermatologist said other than using green primer (after moisturizer) before foundation there is no magic bullet.

Clinique has two that I like.  One is the brush on powder foundation and they have a really light tinted moisturizer type that is great.

Over the years I've tried them all (having oily skin until only recently) from Chanel to drug store brands. I've been using Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse for the past year and couldn't be happier. It works on my now combination skin leaving it with a flawless texture.

Outer beauty, good; Inner beauty, better.
Bask in your beauty.

Tawnya said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

There are a lot of great products here!  I use Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse. It evens out my skin tones and glides on smoothly without enhancing my wrinkles!  Every couple of years, it seems that the product changes or my skin changes.  Lately Maybelline is the one for me.  If my current shade is too light or too dark, I buy another shade (lighter or darker than the one I have) and mix the two in the palm of my hand before applying.

Buying the right makeup can be harder than buying a car!  Good Luck to you!

Anu said to Tawnya 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

A company called DHC makes a silky primer that really smooths out the skin and makes foundation go on evenly. I don't use foundation or powder except when I am "dressing up", but the primer over sunscreen (Neutrogena) works well.

I use to wear Bare Essentials and it was great...now that I am 57 and very close to 58 it settles in my lines.  Then I tired Almay liquid foundation since my skin is sensitive and it looks ok, but my mascara makes my undereye black even with powder over the liquid foundation after just a little while.  I am also looking of something that will work for my "aging skin"

susanpariseau said to gigi 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

this is me to a T. I am 51 close to 52 and due to medication I take for an over active bladder my skin is extremely dry.  That makes my skin look even older.  I tried Bare Essentials as well as some other mineral make ups, but they make every fine line in my face stand out.  I don't know what to do.  I don't want to try a number of things and I am lazy when it comes to taking care of myself, so it needs to be a simple routine.  I excercise and eat right just don't seem to pay enough attention to skin maintenance.   I have an olive tone to my skin and have trouble purchasing the correct shade.  Are there any stores that sell makeup and show you how to put it on?  I have been told you wear your make-up differently when you reach our age.  I haven't worn make up for 5-10 years and just don't remember how to do it.

Trixie said to susanpariseau 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

I'm a MK consultant, but I'm not selling to you - just giving you information.  Find a Mary Kay consultant in your area and try the 'Gentle Cleansing Cream', and the 'Intense Moisturizing Cream'.  As a foundation, first try the 'Tinted Moisturizer (this also has an SPF 20).  If that isn't enough coverage, you can try the 'Full-Coverage' Foundation in an '02' which is for olive skin tones.  I use the TM during the day - and the FC for 'going out'.  I can't tell you how many people (including myself) just wanted skin care, NO foundation. After trying it, it doesn't feel like there is anything on your face!

With MK - you try before you buy - and if you don't like it for ANY reason, you can exchange (even if empty) or even get your money back.

I would start with these three items - basic, simple, & easy to use.  You only need the tiniest bit of product, so it will last much longer than you think it will.

If you try it, let me know how it worked out.

'Creamy Cleanser' - 'Oil Control Lotion 3' for daytime - 'Oil-Free Hydrating Gel' for nightime moisturizer.  Foundation - either the 'Tinted Moisturizer', or 'Medium Coverage Foundation'

I am having the same trouble.  I am also so out of practice, the proper application of make up, eludes me it has been so long.  I hear that your make up and the way you wear it changes with age so I am feeling a bit lost and a lot insecure about wearing it.  I had a Life Style lift done so there isn't the deep lines around my mouth, or as deep.

Great comment. Most ladies don't update often enough - and makeup changes twice a year - Spring/Fall. New colors, formulas. Don't go on a Saturday when dept. stores are busiest. Best counter makeup artists work day hours - Wed-Sat. Lots of fun - and if you don't like it, wash your face!

Hi Tucklady!  I'm German-Irish Red-head (I dye but it was!), pale pale pale 53 but getting those age spots of brown on my upper lip and under my eyes, and I'm not even talking about the freckles... but here's my favorites:

Oil of Olay Definity in the winter as a tinted foundation, it blends great, and if I'm not going to be in it all day I'll dust with mineral powder over it;

and in the Summer, Oil of Olay Total Effects -- a moisturizer with a touch of foundation.

I'm going for the natural look.   I have paid $50-75 for counter cosmetic foundations and thrown them out, like everyone else.  I'm over three years on the Total Effects, just one season on the Definity.  Love them!

Tucklady said to JennC 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

Great idea!  I've been considering Olay for a while. Believe it or not, I found the simplest idea on MSNBC. The idea is to apply blush FIRST- I know... sounds weird, but then apply the foundation over it. So I did... Absolutely amazinG!  I used Bobbie Brown pot blush in pink and then my L'oreal foundation. Could not believe the difference!  Thanks for your suggestion for Olay-- will definitely give it a try!

I'm going to try your suggestion, blush first!

Tawnya said to Tucklady 01/31/2010, 02:44PM new!

TY for the tip re blush first, then foundation.  Much more finished, polished look.  Love it!

Because of rosasea, spots, dots,  and broken blood vessels I broke down and bought the Luminess Air Make Up System.  The end results were amazing using about 6 tiny drops of makeup.  I didn't have that caked on look that I would see when I would actually put on my glasses and look in a makeup mirror a few hours later!  I was so happy!  The only problem is that now I'm having trouble getting the wand that dispenses makeup to dispense it wihout getting clogged up!  I just need to call tech support.  The results were great though!

I have tried different foundations myself. I have tried mineral makeup and am ok with it. My problem is that i still have oily skin. When I used foudation half way through the day it is sitting on top of the oil on my skin. I actually get little pools of foudation sitting on top of my  skin. The mineral foundation that I have used doesn't seem to do it quite as bad...yet I don't get the coverage I would like. Does anyone have any ideas for someone with oily skin. Oh yes I have recently moved to a very humid part of the country so that is another problem.

I am 60 and am happy with my foundation which is Clinique Superfit in color 25 vanilla. It blends nicely and then drys into place. It isn't a heavy foundation, but I find less is better when you reach this age. I do use a primer around my eyes and nose area (Laura Mercier) because that is where it seems to disappear first. I've tried all the 'behind the counter' cosmetics thinking I can do better but I always go back to Clinque Superfit.

Use green concealer over moisturizer, under foundation.  Personally I love Estee Lauder double wear - stays on all day long - and one uses very little.  I dot it on and spread with a brush.  Set with translucent power, then go from there as far as color eyebrows ect.  My experience - dry, fragile skin, is that minerals don't work well for me.  Maybe if your skin is balanced they would work fine.

my problem is the matching of the makeup, i am not black and i am not white... when matching my skin the colorist goes for the red and then i am too red, if she goes for the yellow is not that either.  The best thing for me is to tan in the summer, that is no good as well because the sun damages the skin and mine has had its share of abuse.  I think i am going to try the maybelline, and nothing can erase my dark circles, n o t h i n g.  Anybody has any good tips on this?

Try Smashbox under eye concealer and under eye brightener.  Use after foundation or tinted moisturizer in on.

If you go to the amway global web site you can type in eye cream in the search bar & learn about it.I started out with that several years ago & it is a wonderful product then in the last year I decided to go with the eye cream that offers a virtual eye lift along with the dark circles properties. The time defiance products just awsome!Good luck with it :) let me know if you need any help with it.

Bobbi Brown concealers are very good, but Becca is the best. They offer dozens of shades and come in a dual pot: one side for undereye and the other side for spot application on the face.

Dear Tucklady;  In order to find the right makeup (providing you do need it), you must first like your natural skin.  I was introduce to a product and now use very little makeup, because I enjoy my natural radiant look.  Check-out this website and read the  product best for you and you won't be sorry.  tni.com/2468656.  What I like best is that I get a rebate on everything I buy.  By the way, I to am close to sixty and loving it...............nonigirl

Hi Everyone,

1. Not all mineral make-up is created equal.  GloMineral Makeup is triple milled.  Thus, being more finely ground than the others, it does not cake in wrinkles.  It also nurtures the skin with vitamins, green tea, and has a sunblock.  You can check out their website: http://www.glominerals.com/about.aspx

2. As someone else commented, if you take care of your skin, you greatly lessen the need for make-up.  As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin.  Professional skin care treatments and medical-grade skin care products are extremely effective in reducing the effects of aging.  You will not spend any more than at a good department store but you will see results.  Please consider microdermabrasion and chemical peels, not just make-up.  We're not getting any younger!

3.  In other words, the best foundation is healthy skin.

Sorry for being so preachy, but this is my business, i.e., my area of expertise.
