Seriously, Steve Jobs is a genius!! I've been an Apple addict for 20 years. I WILL own an iPad. Why would anybody ever own a laptop again. Nevermind, as a book junkie, it is AWESOME! I'm in Apple Heaven!!

I can't wait---
I might have to ask for this as an anniversary present ;-) Even my kids were like "You know Mom's gotta have this"
I'm going to start saving my money!!
;-)
I have such lust for the iPad!!! I cannot wait until it is available. I thought my MacBook Air was as good as it gets, but this is utterly amazing. I'll still use the MacBook Air for word processing, though, so it's not useless.
Can I tell you how much I regret buying a Kindle just a few weeks ago? I knew immediately it was too cumbersome and unattractive to be something I would use regularly. It's just not beautiful.
Wow. I've been lusting after a Kindle, too. Just last night, with the release of the iPad, my husband asked me how glad I was I hadn't bought one!
Wow I thought a Kindle would be a great idea for me. Tell me why you don't like it? I hear it holds lots of digital books. How much does it weigh. It looked sleek to me. Is it?
I love my kindle and so do a lot of others!
It's a fabulous thing. It holds tons of books, and yes, it's sleek, easy to use, great for travel. I hardly weigh anything -- less than a book by far. It's way cheaper than the iPad, too. I think I paid around $350 for it.
My issues with it are aesthetic -- I just don't think it's beautiful. I am a Mac-oholic, though, so consider my opinion very biased.
My daughter was talking about asking her husband for a Kindle for Christmas, I told her I had heard of a lot of unhappy users. I think the future will be in something like the iPad, just not sure it is a finished product yet. ( I usually like the second model that comes out on most things)
And how does everyone feel about the name, "iPad?" Check out the front-page article in The New York Times this morning:
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/todayspaper/index/html
I confess it was the first thing I thought of when I heard the name, too, i.e. feminine hygiene & the mini-pad.
I'm 56 & the name thing hadn't crossed my mind. I'm not even sure the average 25 year old would know what a 'sanitary pad" was....thank God those days are gone.
LOL! I had to scroll down to find somebody who had the same thought as I (and my 2 grown daughters) had. I wondered aloud to a group of women if they came "with a belt". :) Obviously, Steve Jobs needs to make sure there's a girl in the room the next time they start brainstorming what to call the next new gadget~
Yayyy! Apple geeks! My brethren! Seriously yes he is a genius. I watched on-line a feed of the presentation while it was happening and was very impressed. (I said I'm a Mac Geek!) I know a lot of people are saying it is useless, but they just don't get Apple. What a beautiful piece of tech. I WANT ONE BAD. I myself would use it all the time. I have my Blackberry, (which I love, but I am on Verizon, so couldn't get an Iphone) and my husband and kids gave me a new IMac for my 50th birthday. So I think the iPad would fit in the middle there. I have been using Macs since 1988 (our very first computer) Been to Mac world many times over the years...always have been excited by their concepts and ability to make everything so intuitive. I am going to MacWorld in 2 weeks and I am looking forward to putting one in my hand to feel it. I love the BOOK function. Leave it to Mac to make it look like a real library. LOL! If you haven't seen the keynote from Jobs or the Video of the iPad check it out....http://www.apple.com/
MY SISTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ONCE YOU GO MAC YOU NEVER GO BACK....
HA! True!
Very true. I am a Mac Geek as well. Started in '91, have owned/worked on them every since. iPods, iPhone, MacBook Pro....all good. I'm a huge reader so this is perfect. I really rely on my iPhone for everything. So, I'm thinking this will be perfect for me (especially when I travel for work). Seriously, I may wait a version (that's usually my policy) as to get a better price and any tweaks that need to be done but Man Oh Man I just can't wait. Now, I know there are detractors out there complaining that you can only run 1 app at a time (Hello, it's a tablet). Maybe they'll enhance that. No camera? I have my iPhone, I don't need no sticking camera ;-) So, yeah for us!!
Ya, about the comments I have been reading in the media about , no camera, no phone. You would look pretty silly holding up the iPad to take a photo or talk on the phone. Especially up to your ear.....LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
;-)
But, I do think a web cam would be a great addition...
It probably would be and you never know...they might add it to the next version.
i want a t shirt that says this!
I am not a Mac user and have resisted for years to switch from my PC. I have 5 novels in my computer, plus dozens of finished shoart pieces (and hundreds of start-ups and ideas), and I've been dreading what the conversion might do to them. Plus, my laptop at 17" is very heavy.
However this new gadget looks like something I'd like to own in addition to my too-heavy laptop so I can take it around with me--not so much to do my work as to use for communicaiton, internet, read books, etc.
Talia, what most people don't realize is that there are many apps on the Mac that are Windows compatible. Office etc. For 16 years I worked in an office where I was the only Mac user and I had no problem being integrated into the process (opening, editing, saving files that were created on a PC). And there are some great Apple apps that are very innovative. I love the idea of a half inch computer (basically) that can go anywhere. You can stick it in your purse. Especially if you have the Mary Poppins purse, like me. I always say I'm going to pull a floor lamp out of that purse one day ;-) Don't you find it incredible if you think back to when we were kids with 13 channels and a dial on our TV's and now look at the technology....amazing.....so, come back from the dark side ;-) ........K
Y'all sound really ready for this thing. I think I will wait for a little while. It has too many extras you have to buy to get it to do everything you want. Buy the time they come out with a Maxi-Pad in a Mini size I might want it.
ill wait until it has a camera
I am so glad you wrote about this. I have a Macbook Pro (MBP). I love it. I would never have a PC again, but I do not understand what this IPad does. What does it do? I paid a great deal of money for my MPB. It has a webcam and mic in it which is great for seeing the grandchildren and reading them a story or they can show you their new bike they day they got it, etc. I love that the most.
My brain is working less and less now so could someone please tell me what this does like in comparison to my Macbook Pro and what the difference in price is. I know that the most expensive one of these IPads is $2000 less than I paid for my MBP three years ago. I imagine it does less than the computer or it is totally different. I hope someone can explain this to me so simply that I will get it, but if you can't, it is not your fault I assure you. My brain is turning to mush. :-)
Okay. I looked at a video about it on apple.com. Then I went to see what the costs were. There were ones with Wi-Fi and ones with Wi-Fi plus 3G. I don't know what Wi-Fi or 3 G is so could you explain that too please? One more question. This thing is not a phone too right? Thanks.
Petitetiger, wifi and 3G are two different ways to connect to the internet. 3G is a broader base access so you can use your iPad the way you use your phone--just about anywhere. Wifi connections depend on a wireless local area network so you have to be in range to get online. In my opinion, it is worth the upcharge to go with 3G access.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for your response. I think one should always get the best when one is buying electronics because the technology gets better and better and pretty soon even the best you just bought is obsolete. These seem so reasonably priced for all they do that I wonder if the price will go down as it usually does with all Apple products or if it won't because the rate is already pretty good.
Hey PT. We do get addicted to our Macs, don't we? I agree with SeaWriter. When I do it (& I will) I'd invest the $ in the 3G model (just like the iPhone). It pretty much does what you MBP does except you can only run one app at a time & there's no camera (but you can hook a camera up to it to download). Basically, you need wireless peripherals to print and if you want an external keyboard etc. But for the price you really can't beat it. The new Kindle is about $389 and it can't compare. I've been contemplating a reader but this just made up my mind. I think for folks that travel it would be great. It also has 10 hour battery life (very good) and the same 30 pin connector as the iPhone & iPods for ease of charging just like your MBP. The industry has been trying to do a successful tablet forever and I think this just might be the one.
Hope all is well with you.......K
Thank you for responding. I think I really get it now. Please tell me if I understand. The one with Wi-Fi works with any wireless network, like the one in my house or at Starbucks? The 3g works like a cell phone browsing the net so it works in lots of places, but there is actually no telephone in this device. It's just for books, music, surfing the web and email. Is that correct?
Also, another question I forgot to ask is about the books. I was thinking about buying a Kindle myself but decided not to spend the money because - well, to be honest, I decided to leave the money in the bank for my SE and the kids. I would not get to enjoy it long enough to spend the money in my mind, but I am considering buying a computer for a good friend of mine. She might just enjoy one of these IPads. What I should like to know first is about the reader part of this. With the kindle it seems like there were lots of books to choose from because it is Amazon. Is there as many books with this and are they as cheap as the kindle books? Oh and another question about 3g. I have not used a phone like that. I only use it to talk on or reply to text messages which I hate, but my kids and grandkids and nieces and nephews like to text me so I do it. Gotta keep up with the times I guess. So my question about 3g is this: Is it fast or does it take forever to get a screen to open like dial-up?
Again thanks for your response (and your concern for my health which is depressing so I won't even go into it, but thanks for asking.
You got it! The 3G works just like a cell phone. it's the 3G technology that the device uses to transport data. And yes it's blazing fast. I have an iPhone 3G & it works great. Keep in mind that it will probably be just thru AT&T (who knows maybe they'll expand to other networks at a later date). Apple will have a site just like iTunes (iBooks) that you'll be able to buy books from, the same way you would purchase books thru Amazon (Don't know yet if you'll be able to download from other sites). I know that they have some big publishing houses sign-on to this deal so there should be plenty of books to choose from. The Wi-Fi version isn't much more than the Kindle but it would be worth a little more money to go with the 3G for better connectivity (just my opinion). It also stores photos, plays videos and of course email...hope that helps......K
I'm a Mac lover as well. The 3G version is worth the wait...but won't be long...and shortly the publishers will all sign on. The technology isn't brand new - it is an expansion of the iPod Touch, so many kinks have already been worked out...or so my computer guru tells me. The main difference between the iPad and a full laptop is the word processing function, which is about the only thing it isn't great for. The other problem is that typing is trickier if you have longer nails, since it responds to touch, by flesh. Having said all of this, it is an amazing product and will be my 60th birthday present to myself this summer - so I'll just have to trim my nails. And it is truly a work of art...a sculpture you can hold in your hand and take with you.
Fela - You say the word processing is it's weak link - really? I watched the Steve Jobs presentation video and was so excited (I too am a die hard Mac Freak) They talked about the word processing capabilities using Pages from the i-Work suit. I do a lot of writing - have been using the Mac version of Word, but assumed that the Pages software would be comparable. Maybe not? Also wondered if my Word files can be transverred successfully to Pages format? The big trade off for me in swithching to an i-Pad, would be not being able to run more than one application at a time - think about it - I now can have Word open while I"m working, and jump over to catch an e-mail, or go looking on the internet for some factoid (or to Vibrant Nation!) as reference for what I'm working on. Thats a bummer. Also, I'm a big fan of Netflx - living in rural Maine and no where's ville Az - but don't think I can use Netflx to watch movies on the Pad - would only be able to access one's available through Macs movie store (same question someone else had about book availability - as in less titles than Amazon) Guess it will catch up, or start sharing before too long, just wonder if we should wait till they get it ramped up. My 4 year old Mac Book Pro, is getting close to it's natural life expectancey, so I'll have to decide soon whether to take the leap to Pad. Do you think it would work in Europe? Whew - that was a lot! Sorrry, but I"m brimming with excitment about this thing and want to be smart instead of just falling for all the glorious Mac looking Mac style bells and whistles as ! Thanks - Sarah
Yes, iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote - all of which I love and currently use on my lap-top) will work. The only problem I have found is that when I send any file as an attachment, most people can't open them since the Mac and PC world seems to use Microsoft Word, etc. So I have to save as pdf to send. Not sure the iPad can do that, but will find out. I work as an art consultant and regularly communicate with clients via e-mail, so a big issue with me. I use Pages and Keynote for art presentations and Word and Excel for the rest. And I agree, multiple applications is a great convenience. So, not yet replacing my laptop, but if you can afford it, have both!!! I think (hope) that eventually these functions will be incorporated. Supposed to work everywhere. My Blackberry, for example, worked in Cambodia, but that largely depends on your service provider and their reach. But you need the 3G.
Great info - thanks! The bit about converting Pages files to jpj in order to send, sounds critical, so will wait to hear what you find out about that. Wish I could afford both, but afraid not. So the juries out as far as replacing my Mac Book Pro - was hoping that would work as I am so excited about the Pad. Will sit tight and learn more, and hope my Mac Book holds out for a few more months anyway.
do not buy one yet, wait until all the kinks are taken out. But it is a great gadget. No more books to carry?
that's what I usually do...then they have a chance to work thru it & drop the price alittle. Wouldn't be great to just able to upload your books?
I agree, I love this company, and will never buy anything else for myself. I bought the big screen i Mac about a year ago. It was so easy to set up, and it is a dream to use. So far, no slowness, no freezing up. I love my iphone too, but I can't always read it comfortably as my eyes are 61 years old....The apps are so cool, have you seen BUMP? My grandchildren are age 16 to 6, and all of them love the iphone, and teach me what is new of I miss something!! I will be getting the ipad for myself too, can't wait.
Great stuff! So, what is BUMP?
Bump is a new app. If two people both have bump as an app on the iphone, they can exchange information by bumping hands with phones together, and the information is exchanged. It is neat at a party, etc. I meet you, we want to exchange contact information, pic, etc, anything on your iphone, just attach the information and bump !
I'm a serious Apple geek, too, and think Jobs is a genius, but to answer the question, "Why would anyone ever own a laptop again?" Well, for one thing, because the iPad doesn't have Flash, which means that whole bunches of websites won't work well on it. And, like all Apple products, the price is too high (IMHO) for what you get. I'm a self-employed professional web designer and a Mac user who just bought a PC laptop with 3 GB ram and a 160 MB hard drive. Why? Because I could get great speed, performance and convenience for $320! Okay, so every time I use it, I feel like I'm cheating on my Mac... but it was worth it! (And Windows 7 is an OS X emulation anyway, so I feel right at home using it). Sorry, Steve, but I won't be getting an iPad any time soon.
It's so nice to know so many women appreciate Macs! All I've ever owned are Macs, although I've used PC's in jobs. Currently own an iBook G4, but will check out the iPad after kinks worked out. YAY!
Steve Jobs does it again!!! A genius indeed, may he keep inventing! I have never owned anything but an Apple (remember the IIGS, the first colorful iMacs, the Performa..., etc...) I have one of each still in their original boxes!! Will start a museum one day.
And next month or next year when the NEXT NEW THING!!! comes out, your I-Pad will join them.
Probably, but the joy of NO VIRUSES, no learning new programs, no bulky "towers", no faulty things like "Vista" and a light and easy to transport computer (even if it's NOT an laptop) trumps anything. I bought my first Apple in 1987........
Besides, I remember when Bill Gates took the simple program that works in Apple and made it into his "Windows"!!!!
I remember I remember! gosh, I think we started with one around 1989. It was over $2000 and I bought it with an inheritance of that I had gotten for $2500. The family was dumbfounded that I would spend that much for a "computer", of course until they came over and played with it. My boys were very little and I remember the different childrens books that we bought. It was sooo fun to click on a cookie and something would happen. Wow. then we had a Performa, a G3 Blue and White, an early IMac, then another IMac, and I am on an IMac Intel Core.....yadayada. I would love the Ipad to be the go to for me in between the phone and my desktop. Since I have no laptop, I think it would be a perfect match for me. I think I will wait for the G3 though. I had a friend over last night that used to work for Apple here in Cali, and he said that his corporate guys are saying that Apple is working with Skype on an addition to the unit. THAT would be very cool.
Skype and Apple...yes! My children are both Mac users and lived far from me.....
I have no laptop either since I only work at home. Never take my computer with me on trips and I am a writer.
Well, I really wasn't aware that it did nearly as much as a laptop. Far as I know between the new iphone (or smart phones), the ipad, and a laptop, they each do different things. Not one of them does them all so you're stuck having one of each if you want to do everything they each do. One day, they'll get smart and one tool will do everything....then we really can throw away the other two.
My husband just today asked me what I'd like for Valentine's Day. I told him to roll Valentine's, Mother's Day, Birthday, and Anniversary all into one an go with an iPad! I am such a Mac fan! I've personally had 5 and of course LOVE my iPod. I can hardly wait for my iPad!!!! I am glad I waited when the Nook came out. I figured Apple would come out with something better.
How is the Ipad? Can you tell me the benefit of owing an ipad? Can you compare laptop and ipad?
thank you
I'm always the last one to show up for the discussion. I am a reader, and I decided my 60+year-old eyes needed a break, so Santa brought me the Kindle DX, and I love it. I can adjust the size of type to as big as I need, and it's so easy to download a book in less than a minute. Most are only 9.99 or less. I too felt like I should have waited when I saw the iPad, but I know the audiobooks at iTunes are too expensive for me, so I assumed the ebooks would be too. Audible.com, owned by Amazon.com, will let you download the audiobooks to this Kindle too. Audible.com has tons of unabridged bestsellers, all at a discounted price if you're a member. Membership only costs 7.95 or 14.95 or the Platinum membership is 22.95/mth for 2 credits, and most audiobooks are only 1 credit. I will probably get an iPad eventually, because it will be so easy to pack and take on trips. Won't give up my Kindle though.
