Weight loss challenge WEEK&PAGE 4
posted 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

This is the last week of the month so lets make it the greatest week so far.  We can do this! We are doing this!

Great job everyone.  We're getting there slowly but surely.  We are VIBRANT WOMEN.  Thank you everyone for the support, words of encouragement and love we give each other.  It's not easy for some of us but we continue to be rewarded for efforts daily.

Quote for last week comes from trumpnetwork:

It's very interesting to see what everyone is doing, and how different systems work for us. Keep sharing, ladies. We will all grow and learn from this thread.

Hang in there everyone, it will pay off.

Thanks Moongoddess for all the support. I am happy to report a 10% success rate of my over all goal - just 90% more to go!  (Disclaimer, I started in November, not January so the 10% represents 3 months.)

Ladies,  Do I have the tip of the week for you this week:  For just $20 and 3 days, you can lose up to 50 pounds - sort of.

I am not a visual person.  I write papers, my sister creates photo books. But for the 4th week of our challenge, I was looking around for photos to create a digitial VN Weight Loss Vision Board for us.  Why bouncing around, I found this site.  Many of us who have been overweight for many years (decades in my case) no longer have a realistic view of what we would look like lighter.  We have our old "skinny pictures", but we know that age as well as weight has changed us. (In my case, I'm a balloon of my former self.)

I stumbled on a website that takes a current picture of you and makes you up to 50 pounds lighter for $20.  You send them a current photo of you and choose the 30 pound or 50 pound package.  If you choose 30 pounds, you are sent 2 photos, one of you 15 and 30 pounds lighter.  If you choose 50 pounds, you are sent 2 photos of you 25 and 50 pounds lighter. Personally, I think this will be a great motivation tool and I'm giving it a try.

I copied one of their press releases is below:

YOU CAN LOSE 50 POUNDS IN 2-3 DAYS!
7/30/2008

50 pounds of weight loss in 2-3 days? It’s true…sort of. Scottsdale, AZ based Motivo, LLC debuts website www.fitpics.com Tuesday, July 29, 2008, featuring a revolutionary “Digital Re-Visualization Process” designed to provide motivation to anyone interested in weight loss. Simply upload a picture of yourself today, and within 2-3 days you will have 2 photos returned showing weight loss up to 25 or even 50 pounds.

“Losing weight is difficult, even painful, and maintaining motivation is the key to success,” says Shane LaPan, co-founder of www.fitpics.com. “By actually seeing the end results before going through all the lifestyle changes required to lose weight, and being able to revisit that photo during times of weakness, you can get beyond your initial excitement and continue to be motivated to follow through with your plan.”

In addition to “FitPics”, the website offers a free motivation course delivered by email. Shane is a 5-Time marathon finisher and a 3-time IronMan Triathlete. So be forewarned, the course delivers motivation from that perspective and excuses or external influences are not given much merit. “You have to be able to motivate yourself and understand your own goals before anyone else can say or do anything to motivate you”.

Dr.She,

Sounds like an excellent way to keep the goal up front.  Let us know how it's going.  And as always, the tips are great.  Keep em coming ;^)

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

So I got my pictures delivered (via email).  The 25 pound loss didn't inspire me at all, but the reduction of my thighs in the 50 pound loss picture looked great.  (I was wearing shorts and a tank top in the picture).  I still have a big head in the picture, I guess they can't shink heads, but th double chins and lumpy bumpy arms and thighs definitely looked better.  Now, to get the body to look that way in the real world, not just the virtual world.

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

That's funny.  There's only one way I know of to shrink heads and it would have to include a nose ring.  Pass.  Are you going to post it?  I have'nt done it yet.  It would give my husband a heart attack.

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Yep...check out the tips paper on page/week 5.  The pictures are there.

I'm baking a cake for two of the ladies who work in my department.  As it's aromitizing my kitchen (is that a word?), I am thinking of how to handle looking at that cake and not partaking.  So, this is how I'm going to handle it.  I'll be strong and take a token, 1"x1" square and then, fill my plate with the veggies from the vegetable tray that I'm also bringing.  Then, I'll give the rest to the girls to take home! I'll let you know how it went.

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I like this idea very much!  Lifestyle changes isn't about denying ourselves, but making good choices.  I think you've nailed it here!

Five to Nine said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I'm feeling mildly virtuous today even though I have been messing up on my new regimen big time.

Last night, I had my ex over for dinner (we're still good friends) and instead of gorging ourselves on the usual fried foods or Chinese food, we opted for Japanese instead -- shrimp shumai, California rolls, dumplings, etc.  Not exactly 'diet food' but much lighter fare than we usually have.  It was tasty and delicious and best of all, we didn't have to loosen our belts after dinner.  Had breakfast at a diner this morning and instead of having pancakes or my usual ham and cheese omelet, I opted for a veggie omelet and tea and I didn't eat the home fries.

The minute anyone tells me I have to follow a specific regimen, I immediately try to figure out how to change it  - I am innately rebellious! :-)   So I know that for myself, I have to find ways to make better choices in doing the things I enjoy.   I lost nearly 25 lbs just five years ago so I KNOW I can do this if I can re-focus!  Today my focus is to not beat myself up for going crazy last week and to just try to keep going in the right direction.

moongoddess said to Five to Nine 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

5-9, What a great revelation you shared.  Sounds like you got full and with all the right things.  Choices, options and decisions.  You are rebelling against the old you where you would have done what you wanted.  So, guess you're still rebelling in a better way. ;^)

Doesn't success taste good?

Dr.She said to Five to Nine 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Well done on balancing your life with your ex as well as your food choices. I'm the same way you are, give me a plan and I look for the loop holes. You are making great choices here!  Look out...2010 is going to be sizzling for you!

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Oh my a She moment today.  Missed breakfast because of an early morning meeting. Had breakfast for lunch.  Around 3:30 ran down to the snack bar, looked longingly at the snicker's bar, but turned my back on it, and reached in the cooler for a small container of cheese, fruit, and crackers. I was feeling very virtuous and proud of myself until about 1/2 hour later when my body reminded me I was lactose intolerant....oooops......oh well, tomorrow is another day....and today was a snicker free day so,......it's a good day.

Dr.She,  Oops, are you ok?  My husband takes lactaid and it really helps.  Otherwise, you had about the same kind of day I had yesterday.  Stepping off track is a bummer.  Today is a new day!  It sounds like you're running harder than ever though.

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Well, I did get a banana at a hour considered breakfast and lunch at lunchtime. Today was better; how was yours?

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I'm still off track.  It's my day off and I met my husband for lunch at a Mexican restaurant.  The rest is history.  I'm not giving up.  Tomorrow and Thursday, I work long days and plan to take only the food I can eat.  Thanks for asking.  The job going well?

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hello, yes, job is going well...just crazy busy.  But a good day today!  Sharing something I received in the email today.  It's an oldie but I thought about this post right away....hugs ladies!

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional
5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell he is.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken
                     by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

I joined a health club last year ... spent about 400 bucks.
Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
                      start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,......
..... just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

                    .... and

Every time I start thinking too much about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour, and by the time I leave,
                     I look just fine.

I can't wait to try it!!!!!

Gradys Nana said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Well, this week hasn't been all that great in the eating department.  I haven't been journaling the food and even though I haven't been counting calories, the writing keeps me aware.  Tonight is our going out for dinner night and my husband wants to try the new Wok Box that opened recently in our town.  Oh well......what can I say?  Tomorrow a.m. will tell the tale - maybe I need a gain to get me back on track again.  I'm walking - outside usually twice a day for close to 30 mins each time and 2 - 3 times a week on the treadmill followed by some stretching exercises.  The pain in my stomach is killing me so something is working - situps??

Good luck to all at the weigh in tomorrow.

Dr. She - thanks for posting my weights.  Even my excel at work isn't compatible so will have to ask you to do it again for week 4.  Thanking you in advance.

Dr.She said to Gradys Nana 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

My pleasure!  BTW...your exercise routine sounds great...the weight will melt...don't give up....

Dr.She said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

No scale movement today...what about the rest of you...movement in the scales? the waist inches?

Five to Nine said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Dropped 2 lbs.  Could have done better but I fell off the wagon a little.  I have a kick-butt cold this week -- had no appetite for two days so I barely ate, but then I made up for it by going for comfort food at the end of the week.  (._.)

Current weight: 199

At least I dropped below 200, which is good but...  I'm planning to do much better next week. (^_^)

moongoddess said to Five to Nine 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Five to Nine,  That's wonderful.  I just maintained but.......I lost some inches.  I'll take it!

Dr.She said to Five to Nine 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

woo hoo!  I can't wait to be able to say I dropped below 200.....congrats!

trumpnetwork said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

The scale didn't budge for me this week. This means that, not only did the number not get lower, it didn't get higher, either. I'll take this as a win, because I had boneless ribs and white rice 3 days out of the week (counting the leftovers, that is).

Dr.She said to trumpnetwork 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

congrats! I agree with you zero equals no gain!

Gradys Nana said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Good morning, Dr. She,  I'm up 1 lb this week - drats!!  But I have no one to blame but myself.  My favourite, white chocolate macadamia nut cookies did not help of course.

If you would post my gain on the spreadsheet for me would be much appreciated.  I'm 183 this a.m.

Congrats to you on "no gain" as trumpnetwork says "it's a win".

moongoddess said to Gradys Nana 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Gradys Nana, I wouldn't worry about it.  Sometimes we just have to do it but knowing that it is once in a while is not eating the whole box as you know.  I just maintained so I'm ok.

Dr.She said to Gradys Nana 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

okay...walk away from the cookies....and you'll rebound in no time!

Gradys Nana said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

The cookies are gone!  And I don't plan to buy any more this week.  I feel like I'm back on track.  I'm planning my lunches for work for this week and salad with some kind of protein in it seems to be what I'm coming up with.  Need to get feeling "clean" inside again.

Hope everyone has a good week.  Nice and mild here still 6 degrees C. and no rain at the moment.  Every day without snow is a good day.

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

We don't have the link up on week 3 to go to week 4.  That accounts for the small number of responses.  I'm going to keep this up because it should be slow next week.  Thanks for picking up the slack here ;^)

Tawnya said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Good Morning.  Finally, a 2 lb weight loss this week, and a 1" inch loss from my waist!  I'm 152 lbs, with a 32" waist and sore muscles!  HOORAY! Gotta do the HAPPY Dance!

Tawnya said to Tawnya 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Three secrets I use to cut down on calories:  #1 is the "Italian Seasoning Grinder"!  It's a wonderful blend of spices that I use on a lot of different dishes.  From hamburgers and steak sandwiches to salads and vegetables.  I use less mayo, salad dressings, and creamy sauces.  #2 is "never pour salad dressing on my salad" and when I'm at a restaurant, I always ask for dressing on the side.  This way I dip my fork of salad into the dressing and I get less dressing and eat less calories.  #3 is I "switched to using a small plate" for dinner and lunch.

Anyone have any "secrets" they would like to share? Hugs to all of us!

moongoddess said to Tawnya 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

YES!  Great job.  WOO HOO, I know what you mean about the inches.  I believe it's in how you feel as much as how much you lose.  Way to go!

moongoddess said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I was looking in the week 2 and found this from i'm not your mother and I want to share it.  She put something up right before this and I asked her to explain further.  It makes sense.  We are not the experts and it's helpful sometimes to know that there are other ways to measure and we shouldn't rely solely on the scales. Here it is verbatum:

Well, let's see... scales weigh your whole body weight. If you are working out, you will most likely gain muscle weight. You might also get bigger in certain areas of your body. Muscle weighs more that fat. Bones weigh more than fat. The best way to understand your true fat/muscle ratio is to be evaluated for that specific thing. I am not against scales per se...however,  if the goal is to loose body fat, then what you must do, is metabolize fat. You do this through aerobic exercise and eating fewer calories. Water is necessary for every metabolic function including metabolizing fat, but it is neither more nor less involved in metabolizing fat than any other cellular function. Therefore, drink the  amount of water required for optimum health, but not because it flushes fat.  It doesn't really.

Water can reduce your appetite and give you a sense of well being, and is necessary for metabolic function in general. Not drinking the required amount of water daily can lead to health problems. You probably know what those are... from lack of mental acuity to gout, etc.

Your anesthesiologist needs to know your exact weight in order to keep you alive during surgery. You need to know your fat/muscle ratio. And what size jeans you wear. If you dropped two jean sizes, would you be weeping on the scale?

I just realized that I did not post this where requested...very confusing. Sorry

Hi ladies  I weighed on Tuesday and had lost 6.1 lbs since last week.  I know having so much more to lose than most of you I should lose more to begin with. Even so I am so excited about the loss. Yesterday (thursday) was my 51st birthday. I told everyone no cake this year. We had a huge ice storm here in oklahoma so that helped with not having to worry about going  out to eat. I am spending this weekend with my boyfriend. That will be the real test as he likes to spoil me a lot. I have explained that I am serious about the weight loss so he should hopefully be supportive. I will weigh again tonight and post my results when I get home. Good luck everyone. This is a wonderful journey we are all on.

Well, I haven't weighed myself yet.  Did an overnight shift on Thursday and yesterday, so couldn't get to the scale before I ate breakfast or even close to my usual time.  So, I WILL weigh myself tomorrow ... I'm positive I've gained.  Totally thrown off by my schedule and eating whatever I can when I can.  Not good.  I'll see my consequences in the morniing.  Great stuff here everyone ... very encouraging.

anir said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hi,

Better late than never.   I am joining you at the weight loss challenge.

I am 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 213 pounds last Friday.  The weight is pretty evenly distributed.

I read your posts and love them all.  I'll try to contribute as much as I can.

Just finished a 12 hour night shift and did pretty good at eating the right things at work.  Drank my 7 to 8 glasses of water.  Walked to work and back, which is only a ten minute walk each way, but adds up to twenty minutes a day.  I also walked up the stairs instead of taking the elevator.  O.K. so I only had two flights, but I figure every little bit helps.  Sometimes it is four flights up.

It is -16C this morning, -27C with the wind chill factor.  OOps!  I think that is about -15F or ... anyways, it is cold.  Am I glad I had the wind at my back walking home!  Of course the layers of clothes, tuque and heavy gloves helped to keep me warm.

Going to bed now.  A good 6 to 8 hours of sleep will help me get back the energy I need to get me on the treadmill before I go back to work tonight.

Josephine,  This is great and welcome aboard.  We are taking turns posting the weeks and DrShe is doing Feb.  Anyway, I think that's how it's going.  I did week 1-4 in Jan.  It's never too late to begin. You may want to check those out as there are many great posts.  Look at your sidebar for the link on week 4.  My picture.

Right now though, go down about 21 boxes and find DrShe's link for week 5.  See you there.

Power in numbers!

Sorry, I haven't posted for awhile. I usually weigh in on Mondays but have lost 3.6 lbs since I last posted. Slowly but surely. Exercise has sucked because I pulled my back lifting groceries of all things, even my beloved yoga has been painful. I've eliminated red meat from my diet and eventually will become vegetarian. I find a plant based diet is much easier on my digestion, not to mention healthier. I bought Alicia Silverstones book "The Kind Diet" and its really changing my views about getting rid of meat. Even if you're not into the whole eating animals thing, there really is a benefit to the body. I'm giving it a try. I feel better so far.

Way to go Freebird!  I'll have to check out that book too.  I've been kinda toying with being more vegetarian.  Thank you!

Well, I knew it didn't I.  I'm back up to 218.8. :(  I'll have to try and be more aware of what I'm doing and know that when my time schedule goes wacky, so does my eating.  A good thing is that I pushed myself (and I mean REALLY pushed myself) to go for a walk yesterday, and I'm going to do it again today.  It's my father-in-laws birthday and he doesn't live tha far away, so I'll walk over and back and only take a small piece of birthday cake.  Nope ... I won't give up.

Excellent attitude....these changes take time.....don't give up....we are here!

I am still in Florida with new Grandbaby and no scale and a daughter in law who is insulted if I don't eat enough for three people! I am still trying and will report in after I get home. Love reading everything and am inspired by your losses and great attitudes.

Evie said to Terri43 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hi Terri43,

I totally know where you are coming from!! Family, food, and expectations!!

I have been with family for the last ten days and have been experiencing temptations around every corner. There was no scale and delicious meals, desserts, snacks, drinks...way too much of everything! I slapped my hand quite a bit, but not enough! I think I have gained some and feel a little defeated.

I worked so hard, when we started this VN weight loss program, and I know I lost some.  I'm starting back on "square one" now. Maybe we can catch up! :) Do you think??

I do like reading what the girls are accomplishing and hope to join them in their losses!! So, hooray to all the winner/losers!! :)

Stay in touch Terri...let's do this thing!

Hugs to you and your new grand baby!

Hello Moongoddess, Dr. She, and all!!

I am glad you are all still here and working at this weight loss 'thingy'. Lol I'm not taking it lightly...no pun intended! I am going to get real serious now that I am back from the 'den of over indulgence'! So, thank you for your vigilance, for being here, i need you gals!

Many hugs!

Hello...you were missed. Welcome back.  Did you have a great time?

Evie said to Dr.She 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Yes, we had a wonderful time! My older son lives in L.A. (2,400 miles from mom) and I miss him so much! I love my little daughter in law, too! Other family members joined us and we spent hours (around various meals!) talking. ;)

It is good to be back to a routine where I can control my 'food factor'.

it sounds like you are having some success! I'm happy for you and need to hear these good reports! Keep it up!!

moongoddess said to Evie 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hi Evie,  Missed you too.  Don't let it bother you, just make it up.  That's what it's all about for me.  If I have a setback, I just don't let it turn me around.  Last week, at my visit with the clinic, I was down because it wasn't budging for me.  So we did some measurements and I found that I had some success after all.  I'm not giving up.

Evie said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hello Moongoddess,

It feels so good to get back to you gals and your success stories. Gosh, if I get thin, I sure would miss y'all! Hahaha That will be the day!

Well, anyway, it is good to be back and I so appreciate your support! Congratulations on your recent loss! I know you are going to 'do this thing'!

Is everyone aware of Kirstie Alley's answer to Twitter? It's somewhat Twitter-like, but different, and dedicated to sharing one another's ongoing weight loss stories. Anyway, tomorrow is Day 1 of a walking challenge that you ladies might want to join. Check it out at phitter.com and I'll see you over there!

I am interested in joining your challenge but know nothing about it except what I read here that sounds like such great encouragement and help.  Please let me know how to do this.  My e-mail address is davicki12@yahoo.com.  Woops I hope I can give that!

Hi GrandmaV,

Welcome.  This is for everyone who wants to share their ideas, progress, recipes and conversation.  So glad you came on board.

Go down about 3 posts and find the link on DrShe's post.  (star fish) and then go there to post all the info about you.  Whatever you feel like telling us.  Confession is good for the soul.  See you there ;^)

p.smith said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I want to join your challenge. I am 5 feet tall and weigh a whopping 150 pounds, 20 pounds of which has crept on since November. Surgery has sidelined my exercise efforts, but I have also been pigging out.

I want to lose this twenty lbs asap. Plan to use w w points mostly, as this worked for me well when I used it a few years ago.

Sign me up!

Okay, I've ignored this post  for too long, I'm ready to sign up, what do I do?  I'm traveling this week so I may have trouble getting in the grove - be kind!

Hi Ladies, well I didnt get to weigh on Friday which is sad because I know it would have shown a loss. I totally blew the weekend. We ate Mexican saturday  had breakfast out twice  plus drinks at the party we went too. I am scared to weigh now.  Oh well tomorrow is a new day and a great day to get back on track.  I will do better this week.   Oh and how do I find the link for the new page each week please?

jezzarae said to jezzarae 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Ok I admit it I am blind I see the link thanks.

moongoddess said to jezzarae 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Good job.  Mexican is tricky.  Stay with chicken.  Rice is high in carbs and of course, it's all high in salt.  Drink lots of water to help flush it out.  See you in week 5.

Sharon Jean said to moongoddess 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

I have been on a product that is fabulous. Lost 20 lbs and 12 in. in 3 months. Feel great have lots of energy and absolutely no cravings. I am a chocoholic and a carb eater but not since I have been on this product. I love it.

moongoddess said to Sharon Jean 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Do you want to share it?  Not sure what the rules are but if you're not selling it, I don't see why it's a problem.  Variety is great.

Evie said to Sharon Jean 01/24/2010, 01:56PM new!

Hey, Sharon Jean...what's the product, already!!! LOL
