2010 WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE, PAGE 2
posted 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

This has been an exciting week for 55 plus members. We are already 11 pounds lighter. The challenge is on its way and it is looking like success for us. DrShe has made numerous spreadsheets and other tools for us to keep track. She sent them to Marilyn and they should be posted here tomorrow or soon, so take advantage. We are starting this new thread to help speed things up so when we post, it won't take so long to spool up and hopefully to reduce the amount of duplicate postings. Thank you everyone who is participating on or off, we love you. We can do this together.

Thanks, Moongoddess for your ongoing efforts in all of this. It's a grand thing and so appreciated!! I am still cutting back on food and exercising, but that STUBBORN needle barely moves!! Staying in touch with this thread helps a great deal! To know others are struggling with 'the girth' does help! Big hug!

We can all thank DrShe.  She's the expert and has put so much of her expertise into this.

Just got home from work and I'm now dipping my vegetables into my light ranch dressing.  Yum.  Don't know what I making for dinner yet.  I'm bound and determined to lose or stableize this week!

Hugs.

Ok, I weighed myself on the 8th, and I'm 218 lbs, and I'm 5'5".  I am under so much pressure for the next week that I have to be really careful about how I eat ... pretty vulnerable.  Thank you for having this post, and because of school, work, and possible having a court ordeal with a car dealership, I may only be able to check in once a week.  Thank you for such a great post ... oh, and I'm 53.

Evie said to findangel 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

These pressure times can make us VERY vulnerable to reach for comfort, or even convenient foods! Just be as mindful as you can be and remember we are all here to cheer you on! This is not an easy thing we are doing! I have a family reunion coming up soon! There will be food everywhere! :-/ Good luck to you!

I agree.  Such a week this week...oy vey indeed!!!! I reached for my friends Pepsi and Snickers often....now time to detox again.  Still, begin a new position next week, so even though it will be a new stress, it won't be that everyone clawing at your to get the last bit of knowledge out of your skull before you leave them stress of this week.  :-)

Evie said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Snicker bars!!!!!!!! I loooove them! What a cruel, cruel world...to have something so delicious, and yet, so FATTENING!

My 'dieting' needs routine, desperately! Our business requires travel and this is where my eating problems set in. There is no routine. We 'live' in airports..."trains, planes and automobiles", that's our life... and hotels are home for us! I'm in an Alexandria hotel as I write this! So, my new plan is to ask for a frig., go shopping for boiled eggs, veggies, etc. and 'try' to control eating out!! This is where I put on my pounds.

I had a luscious dream of chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream last night!! When I told my husband this a.m., he laughed and laughed! He said,I have never dreamed of food in my life!!" Smarty pants!

I know my clothes are feeling a little looser, but am still avoiding the bath scale...don't have one, here! :) I will weigh in and report...eventually. I promise!

When I was  breaking my addiction to cigarette smoking (which was very hard!!) I remember craving a cigarette, big time! When I had cravings, I resisted as long as I could, and only had one when I was ready to 'pop'. Lol I weened myself from cigarettes (got the nicotine out of my system. I am doing that with food, these days...weening myself from snacks...all the extras, etc.

Well, good luck to you, Dr. She! We're out here cheering you on!

Dr.She said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Thanks for the laugh, sharing the dream, and understanding.  The craving thing for me is like silencing the stress monster.  Just one bite and all that inside insanity calms down and I can go on being a reasonable person.  :-)

Good thing about the new position, along with a promotion it comes with a building that has a cafeteria with a steam table, grill, salad bar, etc. The cafeteria also posts low calorie choices. Much better than my old building with the candy and coke machines in the basement.

Evie said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Well, we "Snicker bar ladies" have it running in our veins and salad, etc. looks so BORING! It takes Herculean strength to reach for low fat, low calorie, low cardboard, tasteless...*%#&! LOL BUT...and that's a big butt...just kidding...we must do this thing!!

I am depending on you, all of you, to give me the strength to continue saying No!...to real food. Lol

It's good that you have that new cafeteria. Having food (that you don't have to prepare, attractively displayed, will help a lot!

Well, have a good week. We are at the Dulles airport in God awful weather (rain) getting ready to fly home.

Another week, another opportunity!

Oh, congrats on the promotion!!

Dr.She said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Thanks...I survived today...snicker's free and within the calorie count.  I just realized you were close to me this weekend.  Sorry for not "getting that" before now. I should have reached out.  I've been busy trying to cut a 150 page dissertation into a 25 page report for a presentation.  Sounds easy, but I still have another 40 pages to cut...Hope you landed somewhere dry.

PS  Thanks for the congrats! :-)

And yes, this week will be a good week for us all. :-)

Got weighed at WW today and was up 1.6. I was down quite a bit last week so my body is reluctant to let it go. I ate well and did my yoga but its stubborn. I am trying so hard to be easier on myself with the scale, but old habits are hard to break and I found myself angry again. SOoo, I went to yoga as soon as I got weighed and zenned out and felt better. What is, is.

"THE SCALES" is one of my biggest problems!  I too have been watching what I eat...very carefully, but my weight clings to me like 'barnacles on a boat' or should I say submarine! I am trying something different...not weighing myself for awhile!

I have hung up a cute blouse, that I wore in my younger years, and when I 'feel' smaller I am going to try it on! I always lose my breasts first!!! I will know when I button those buttons across my top that I have lost weight. THEN,  I will get on the scales! There is something defeating about watching that stubborn needle just sit there. It almost screams...na, na, na...see, you can't lose weight! Lol Well, this is my plan...we shall see.

Evie, you hit on it.  Sometimes that scale lies to us.  Can you imagine?  When I was reading this, I remembered something that happened at my weight place.  I was feelinng really good and I know when I put on my pants that morning, I knew I had lost.  When I weighed in later, One hr later, I had only lost 1 pound.  So they measured me and I had lost mega inches and it showed.  But not on the scale.  It was being mean and manipulative.  You will get in that blouse and wear it like a medal!

Ps, tell DH that he may have to eat what he brings you so he'll have to be careful ;^)

I know that my scales (all three of them) are talking to one another at night...there is a conspiracy! So, I am going to trick them with my blouse idea. Heh!  I think I will try 'turning it around' on my hubby "thanks for the cookie, hon, now you eat it! :) xo's

moongoddess said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Gorgeous pic.  Now I see why you have your hubby waiting on you hand and foot and food.

I only own 1 scale.  It's one too many.  I go on Fridays to weigh in.  That way, I'm not tempted to weigh before.

BTW, I finally responded to your posts we had going.  I just didn't see it for a while.  Wish there was a better way to see when we got "mail".

Evie said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I know, I forget to respond all the time. Maybe the VN Gods will come up with a better format to help us out. I have gone two days only to find this great response to one of my post! I think I have lost some, permanently. Using the computer is not one of my strong suits! Forgive me if I don't respond sometimes. We go 'on the road' and I lose everything...including my mind!  xo's

Ladies...I understand what you mean about the scales....mine are tuned to the one in the doctor's office but with my thyroidism it's hard to take them seriously.  One day I'm down 5 pounds, the next day I'm up 10.  I only get excited when the weight stays then same around a month.....And let us remember my mantra  "anyday above ground is a good one!"

This thyroid 'thingy' is little understood by most folks. It is a killer when trying to lose weight. It's like the pounds are superglued on!! Before my hypothyroidism set in (years ago) I could shed five pounds in two week. It would roll off of me! Now, a pound takes two weeks. Oh, moan, groan! Lol

Thank you, sweet one! :)

findangel said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Well, maybe it's reassuring to know that you're in better shape because you have more muscles than fat now.

moongoddess said to findangel 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Exactly. I'm not working out but my density has always been higher.  More muscle as you so.  The muscles seem to be going away more and more.  There is an excercise regiment in my future.  I see it coming.

Freebird said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

As much as I hate them, I need the scales. I tried going scale-less when I quit weight watchers over a year ago. When I did get back on, it was up, way up. I creeps on me and I don't even realize it. What I need to do is just get weighed and forget about it.That is why I go to a yoga class right from weighing in. Its much better for me than a weight watcher meeting. I go to a meeting later on in the week if I feel I need one, but after being at weight watchers for 2 years and never missing a meeting, I've heard just about everything. I know exactly what to do to lose the weight. Don't we all.

moongoddess said to Freebird 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

That's why it's good to set a weekly weigh in.  Same time of week and day to get the best reading.  I know what you mean about it creeping in on you.  Dang!

Evie said to Freebird 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I know I trick myself all of the time into not sticking to 'the eating regime'. It's amazing how cunning we can be around food! So, we do know what to do, but...it's so hard!!!! I lost 25 lbs. with weight watchers, of course I put it right back on! :}

Dr.She said to Freebird 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Agreed...if only my body did everything my brain knows it should be doing.  And I agree with you about the scales...good to have a weekly check point.

Hey, moongoddess and all!

It is Wednesday and I'm wondering how y'all are doing? I feel slightly, only slightly, looser in my clothing. I am waiting to weigh when I feel like the needle may drop some.

I check in here every day to see the progress, hear words of encouragement, etc. :) We started out with confessions, a lot of sharing, and very enthusiastic...now, it's getting tougher. I know I feel hungry for my carbs, but am being pretty good, thus far. And they say climbing Mt. Everest is tough! Ha!

We have all kinds of 'eating experiences' coming up, including a family reunion in California. There will be a lot of cooks there, so the food will be abundant. This will be a real test for me!!!!!! I can starve for two weeks and lose a pound, but eat well, for a week end, and gain five. Where is the justice in that?!! One of the "cooks" is an actual chef and LIVES food! The other lady is young, slender and beautiful and, boy can she cook...and doesn't gain a pound!

Well, this is just me wanting to gab about weight loss (or not!) to those who understand. :)

Have a happy Wednesday!   Evie

moongoddess said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Hi Evie,

It's hard for me to quit cheating on myself.  You said in a previous post how cunning we are.  So true.  If we could just say to ourselves with conviction, STOP IT!  Walk away, drink some water, have someone put it out of sight, or have the courage to do it ourselves, we would be better off.  Do we?

There was a women who came into the store yesterday who will be getting married in the fall this year.  When she bought her dress about 6 months ago, she wore a 28.  That is the largest we carry.  Every month, she comes in and her consultant goes through the ritual helping her on with her dress which is a 22.  Yesterday, she was able to zip it.  We all celebrated with her.  What a fantastic accomplishment.  I immediately thought she had some medical procedure done but found out that is is pure will.

Some of her tips she shared is when she eats, she puts it on a child size plate.  That is all she eats for each meal.  No seconds.  The lesson is portion control.  What if you could eat anything on your plate and then when it was gone, no more.  Have your cake and eat it too.  I would also add that eating it slowly, cherishing each bite and being conscience while doing it.

Good luck Evie and all, I do know what you're up against.  WE CAN DO IT!  WE WILL DO IT!

Evie said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Geesh! Down size 28 to 22...bless her heart! Child size plate...hmmm, good idea!

Oh, lordy! I need this team to keep going!! I think I can, I think I can...............

Dr.She said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I agree with the small plate.  Also another suggestion was to consider your plate in 4 sections, one for protein, one for veggy, one for starch and one for fruit.  And no spilling into the other quadrants.

I know for me portion control is the most important thing.  If I have a whole bag of something in the house, I'll eat it.  I only buy individual servings so that when it's gone, its gone.  I know it costs more and is counterintutive to my other goal of saving more this year, but I need the artificial control of having the portions created for me.

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Actually, you should be even, you wont' have to replace that bigger bag more often and if you gain it back, you have to pay for that realestate again.  Good job.  I like smaller portions and healthy choices.

Dr.She said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

good way to look at it...thank you.

Evie said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I think that if I feel like I am at least getting nutrition, well, it helps me to know that. I may feel like I am starving, but when I reflect over my eating schedule, all good, smaller portions, I know that the "screaming" coming from old eating habits is, well, the "sirens calling to me from the shore" tempting me!

So, smaller portions it is! big bags of the 'good stuff'...no more!!

I need to save more $$, too. cutting back on groceries can do that! Hey, hey hey!

Edit for another minutes

Curticy of dynamomma from her ABBY thread;  Thank you dm.

A WOMAN'S WEEK AT THE GYM
This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.

Dear Diary,
For my birthday this year, my Husband (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.

My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

________________________________
MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!

Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!!

________________________________
TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It's a whole new life for me.

_______________________________
WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other shit too.

_______________________________
THURSDAY:
Asshole was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late - it took me that long to tie my shoes.

He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny bitch to find me.

Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.
_________________________________
FRIDAY:
I hate that bastard Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little aerobic instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it.

Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

________________________________
SATURDAY:
Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

________________________________
SUNDAY:
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

I love this...Thanks for sharing moongoddess and dynnamomma. Years ago when I was young and healthy (before the auto accident and the diseases), I belonged to the Louisville Athletic Club. They had these great machines that you programmed with your starting capability. Each time you used them, they would talk to you and tell you You are doing great, You are a rambo  Or You are a wimp, What is wrong with you?  I loved those machines but I haven't found any like them around DC.  This posting reminded me of them and how great (silly though it was) that I felt when a computerized voice called me Rambo.

I want to share my cheesecake recipe.  I like it but it does make alot.  Haven't figured out how to halve it.  Where's Julia when you need her?

CHEESECAKE

6 eggs

2 Tbs lemon juice

1 tsp Vanilla

15 pkgs. Diet Sweetner (I like spenda)

24 oz. Low fat cottage cheese

Cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350*.  Ingredients should be at room temperature.  Blend all ingredients except cottage cheese and cinnamon thoroughly in a blender.  Gradually add cottage cheese.  Blend until smooth.  Pour mixture into 9X13 glass dish or a 9" pie glass plate.  Top with cinnamon.  Bake for 45  minutes or until cake is firm.  Turn off oven and leave cake in oven with door open for 1 hour.  Chill overnight.  Serves 6-8

I like to put fresh berries over mine.  Sweetened with splenda.

Enjoy!

Wow, while shopping for the ingredients, I found that they also carry Wilderness cherry pie filling in 3 versions.  One normal, one low sugar 65 cals and one that is suger free and 35 cals.  I took the last one and had a couple a Tbs over my first pc of cheese cake.  yum.  It also counts as my protein.  Eggs and cheese.  And ok, so there is no cream cheese in it but it still tastes good to me and I'm happy with it.  findangel, that might be something to consider.  How would it be if it was low cal surup over the top.  Like the chefs do with the zig zag pattern.  Presentation is everything ;^)

Hi, Im in too.  Im a little older, 71, been trying to lose since I stopped smoking 14 years ago.

In 5 years I had gained 35 lbs and got high blood pressure for my trouble.  Lucky I quit smoking.  Lol.  Ive since lost 10 lbs and the needle stopped there.

Every Saturday my 10 year old granddaughter, soon to be 11, comes over to spend the day and we weigh in 1st thing in the morning.  We have the Wii fit and were trying together now to get healthy.

Restless,  If I told you that you had to gain 4 pounds this week, what would you do?  Resonable goals because you may be dissapointed.  If you lose 4lbs, I'll eat my shirt.  Because it doesn't have any calories.  And then, I want to know how you did it.

Take care and don't starve yourself.  I always think of the story where when out in the desert, with very little water, the body will conserve it's water to survive.  If you are starving your body, you actually will be shutting down to conserve. Eat like a bird:  small portions and often.  But stay away from the worms ;^)  Unless you like worms.

Thank you. I am probably going to be the heaviest member in this group. I am 51 5'9" and weigh approx 380lbs. Not sure of my exact weight as I do not have scales that will weigh that heavy.

I have severe fibromyalgia and have used that as an excuse to wallow in my pain and pack on the pounds. I am determined to take control of my life again and regain my health and vitality again.

I will take my measurements and use them as a guideline for how I am progressing.

I'm not going to report in until next Friday since I just started... and also because I pigged out yesterday - LOL!   Serious emotional eating day yesterday and I'm still trying to work on some behavior modification.

Question:  Is there a separate thread to report results, and/or -- dare I say it -- has any thought been given to moving this off of Vibrant Nation?  Love this site but the server is sloooooooooow when there are multiple responses, and the private email is not very functional.

Just asking.... ;-)

Dr.She said to Five to Nine 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

As moongoddess started this, I'll let her answer about moving it offsite.

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

We already have the link for recording (those who want to participate) but moving it each week and having a link to connect might help.  It's when we try to go to the first thread that it becomes really slow for me.  Marilyn has said we can continue if I'm understanding her.  What's the feasibility for doing it Doc?  I think whatever works and doesn't complicate this is worth looking into.  Another thought is, is there anywhere on the internet that wouldn't slow down with the high volume?  I'm not an expert (surprised aren't you).

Have to go wiegh in so I'll check back in about an hr.

Tawnya said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I too have slow response, but I don't want to see this post go off site.  This is a VN weight challenge in a neighborhood where everyone knows your name and so so much more.  There are already a gazillion web sites out there that have groups to join for losing weight.  We would lose the warm and caring atmosphere that comes from VN and into this post.  I love that you have brought a group of women together to achieve  a common goal.  And who knows what the next goal will be, here on VN, where we can meet again and remember one another from the challenges we faced together in the past.  Anyway, that's just my 2 or 3 cents worth.

moongoddess said to Dr.She 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Since this is the end of the second week, let me start a new thread Week 3 and let Marilyn put up the links.  I didn't have any trouble getting here and I think when it gets closer to 100 it starts so slow down.  Was it slow for you Five to Nine on this one?

What do you think?

Five to Nine said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Not as slow as the other thread was so I guess we're doing OK. :-)   Hope anyone didn't think I was being pushy.  When I was on eDiets years ago, I adopted an "Atkins-esque" meal plan and lost about 23 pounds.  I started the thread there and kept it going so I think I just fell back into "group leader" mode for a second! :-)

moongoddess said to Five to Nine 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

The new thread will be up for week 3 on Sunday eve.  It will give the Doc a chance to calculate and record the results.  Record our weight on Friday (or close) and the next week on Sunday.  The routine may have to be tweaked.  I think they're doing everything they can to accommodate this and lots of us have links to sites.  Thank you.  I can see you have leadership skills.  Part of that middle child syndrome ;^)

Gradys Nana said to Five to Nine 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Hi, Dr. She,

My gauge, at present, are the 'somewhat looser' clothes. Feeling hungry all of the time and dreaming of chocolate cake tells me that my intake (food-wise) is down. Progress is being made...I'm just afraid of the bath scales. In time...

Congrats on not gaining!!! That is something to be proud of! We thyroid ladies have that extra problem, but we can do this!

Dr.She said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Looser clothes sounds great....I'm looking forward to that myself.  I understand about the scales trust me.  It took me 5 years to buy one and bring  "that thing" back in my home. :-)

Hi All, It's Jan 15, my waist is 33 in, down 1/2 in; my weight is 154, down 6 lbs in 2 weeks!  (I broke down and bought a scale!)

I don't expect to see this kind of weight loss in the future.  Prep for surgery by fasting and drinking that awful magnesium stuff, plus the stuff the surgeon took out, really helped with a few of the lost pounds!  But I'm happy!

Some of the things I'm doing is:  having my big meal at lunch, which is last night's leftover's.  If I have no leftovers I have something like tuna and crackers and fruit.  I use a small plate for my evening dinner, that really helps a lot!  And my favorite new thing is a glass of warmed grape juice in the evenings, sometimes 2 glasses!  I know that sounds weird,  but I always had a glass of red wine  and decided that I needed to cut the calories but still have an enjoyable evening drink!  I never thought about heating juice, but it really is good!  And it's the best served in a wine glass!  :)

I keep reading all this stuff about scales. Just keep in mind, scales do not weigh fat.  Just saying. The only person who really needs a scale is your anesthesiologist...and your doc, especially if you are ill.

Evie said to i am not your mother 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I'm not sure I get this one. I don't use the scales, but plan to when I'm no longer afraid to step on one! I think they do give us a general idea of 'what's happening' in our weight world.

moongoddess said to i am not your mother 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Hi i am not your mother,

I just saw your other post about the water and now this.  The water explanation was a little more complete than this one.  Please explain more clearly but put it on the challenge week/page 4.  I'm very interested in anything you have to offer.  How do you come by this knowledge?  Thanks.

i am not your mother said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Well, let's see... scales weigh your whole body weight. If you are working out, you will most likely gain muscle weight. You might also get bigger in certain areas of your body. Muscle weighs more that fat. Bones weigh more than fat. The best way to understand your true fat/muscle ratio is to be evaluated for that specific thing. I am not against scales per se...however,  if the goal is to loose body fat, then what you must do, is metabolize fat. You do this through aerobic exercise and eating fewer calories. Water is necessary for every metabolic function including metabolizing fat, but it is neither more nor less involved in metabolizing fat than any other cellular function. Therefore, drink the  amount of water required for optimum health, but not because it flushes fat.  It doesn't really.

Water can reduce your appetite and give you a sense of well being, and is necessary for metabolic function in general. Not drinking the required amount of water daily can lead to health problems. You probably know what those are... from lack of mental acuity to gout, etc.

Your anesthesiologist needs to know your exact weight in order to keep you alive during surgery. You need to know your fat/muscle ratio. And what size jeans you wear. If you dropped two jean sizes, would you be weeping on the scale?

I just realized that I did not post this where requested...very confusing. Sorry

Terri43 said to moongoddess 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

I refuse to be discouraged!! I dieted perfectly (1500-1600 calories a day) and went to the gym 4 times this week and the needle is still stuck on 200 exactly. I did start a drug that said weight gain might be a side effect so I am going to be grateful that I didn't gain.  I journal to count calories and at the end of each day I look at the food list to see if there is anything I could get rid of and not feel deprived. I use egg beaters instead of eggs and I learned that I can leave cheese out of my omelet and not miss it as long as I put in lots of veggies and herbs. I also learned that what I love in a hamburger is all the things I put on it instead of the meat, so I always have portobello burgers or just lettuce and tomato and pickle sandwiches!

Today my newest granddaughter was born, so I am off to Florida for 3 weeks to hug the baby and try to be helpful. I will be away from THE scale but I will try to eat right and keep in touch!

moongoddess said to Terri43 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Terri43,

Do not get discouraged!  It takes a while.  These questions come to mind.  Are you drinking enough water?  Have you noticed a change in your regularity?  (I have before and had to get a little help in the form of a pill.  Our body protests and we have to kick it in the butt sometimes.  So to speak).  Are you weighing at about the same time?  Are you taking off any denim clothing?  Maybe keeping a consistency with wearing the same thing every time.  Eating red meat more than 2 times a week is something you may look into.  At my wt. loss place, they don't want us to eat red meat the night before.  It takes longer to digest so just some things to think about.  Also, are you keeping a log?  Even chart the water you drink which should be 64oz.  Good luck.  It will drop off if you're doing all the right stuff.

Dr.She said to Terri43 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Congrats on the baby...have a great time....and you are correct, no gain is a win in my book.

Tawnya said to Terri43 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

Evie said to Terri43 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

You sound DETERMINED! This is the main psychological strength needed. This cannot be a half hearted kind of thing. It takes what you are doing...THINKING about what you are eating and DOING what it takes. Thanks for the encouraging post.

Hello beautiful women!  Ok, so last week I was actually 218.2, and today I'm 214.6.  It came to me really fast how this can deceive me.  First thing I thought was "oh, so the chocolate I had the other day is ok, so I can have some more".  Losing weight is such hard work .... it's not fun ... I have to constantly be conscious of what I'm doing and eating, and I get the "it doesn't matter this time" attitude and end up having that second helping or late night snack, and I just don't want to have to be careful all the time.  It's exhausting.  Anyway, this is where I am at today.

moongoddess said to findangel 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

findangel,  nice job.  After a while it will be second nature.  It sucks but it will be worth it.  Don't be hard on yourself and realize we're all in the same boat.  Late night is the hardest for me too.  Last night, I had two cookies.  Even though I report a lose this week. If I think I lost even though I cheated, then I'm giving myself permission to cheat.  It's so,so hard to walk away and do something to take my mind off of food.  Being a decorater, my kitchen screams FOOD!  So if I'm not in it, I don't think about it as much.  Have something quick and ready when you go slumming (I call it that because I will pick up a cookie or crumbs that are on the counter)in the kitchen tonight.  Hot cocoa might work. and drink it somewhere else so you're not tempted to have anything else.  We can do this.

moongoddess said to Evie 01/10/2010, 07:20PM new!

It's red and soft gold.  Food colors.  My husband put a floating wood floor in the kitchen  and built a kitchen island out of sections of unpainted cabinetry and I painted it matte black.  (I'm the painter) and then he put 12x12 beige marble tiles on top with a wood border and completed it with knobs that match.  I put real fruit in a fluted bowl and it not only looks like food, but smells like it.  Dang.  No chocolate, I ate it.

Good morning from Ontario Canada and today is my start to getting back in shape!

I just weighed myself and i'm 157lbs. at 6 feet tall. Yesterday i went to see my Dr. about a tendonitis in my thumb and left being vit. B deficient! great!...how did that happen!.. however a good time apparently to get myself back in shape... So.. i've weighed in.. taken a multi vitamin with extra B6 and a calcium pill. Feel better already to have started in the right direction..

Last night before i went to bed i washed the water bottle container out and have everything in place.. My chart on theh table to write down everything i eat and the fridge is full of healthy stuff and nothn' tempting in my cupboads!

Today is the first of the walking. I used to walk tons 2 years ago and i felt soooo good so.. a  new start today.. I live in the country on a lake with lots of walking.. in the daylight hours only as i'm always afraid of running into a bear!

Tomorrow is back to work so tonight i will have my bags packed with all the proper food i need and.... into another day...

I think we are all doing just great!.. and will feel so much better both mentally and physically for it... Off to my first healthy breakfast!

rivers,  the b6 helps boost the metabolism.  Good luck.  How much are you wanting to lose?  You have to be pretty close, No?

Please go into the next wks posting.  Just go up a couple of posts into the link for week 3.  See you there.

I heard B vitamins give you crazy dreams so if you have any you need to share them here OK?

jbfox, crazy dreams?  Hum, I'm an active dreamer, maybe that's why.  If I have any good ones, I'll share ;^)

Good morning moongoddess:  How to we report this week's results?  Right here?  Okay this morning Friday 1/22/10 I weighed 213#.  I am very pleased about this 3# loss.

I, too, am having problems with the weight letting go. I'm journaling what I eat, watching portions, have pretty much cut out almost all candy, cake, etc. The only sugars I get now are from fruit and what's hidden in certain foods, like yogurt. I've bumped up my fruit consumptions so I'm not really missing them. Once in a while I get a craving and when I do I have 2 chocolate covered cherries or a few semi-sweet chocolate chips with a few walnuts or almonds and then the craving is done. I've started to exercise. I have some problems there due to my back and knew problems but I keep trying. The scale only goes so far and then nothing. the one thing I have noticed though is my clothes seem to be fitting me differently and looser and things seem to be rearranging themselves. My bras are suddenly looser and I've had to go to the last hooks and even then they seem still lose around. My pants feel looser. I haven't lost enough weight for this kind of difference. Only 5 pounds. But I'm not giving up!!!!!! I figure eventually something has to give.

Carnright, it sounds like you're on the right track!  Keep up the good work!  Remember, it took time to put on the weight and it will take time to lose it!  Baby steps and water, water, water! Hugs

p.s. check out the continuation of this post on page 3.  Page 4 will be up soon.
