Right now I am just beginning to feel some pleasure of menopause thanks to the discovery of wild yam extract which is helping with my hot flashes -- more like total body sweats!  Makes me look like I've just run a 26 mile marathon!!!  Looking forward to more and more peace and contentment.

The pleasures of menopause??  Mine sound so very odd!  My #1 fav is that I no longer have migraines!  What a wonderful weight to have lifted from ones soul!

With that I suspect came my next one.... which had been creeping up on me for a decade or so... and that is just (truly) being comfortable in my own skin.  This is an idea I spoke about for years.  I think it just took awhile to really sink in with me.

Advocado said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I am waiting for the pleasures. So far the only thing I have noticed is emotional lability. I cry at the drop of a hat. Even a commercial can make me tearful. No hot flashes as yet, still experiencing painful regular periods.

janice said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I just went for my physical, and I am officially "post menopausal".  I thought I would bypass the hot flashes, as I have always been hot, when other people have felt normal body temperatures.  But the night sweats have been coming fast and furious.

The pleasure of menopause for me has been becoming more comfortable with who I am and not apologizing for it any more.  I have take control of my health by losing 90 lbs. and am looking forward to experiencing the most vibrant time of my life, emotionally, physically and sexually.

I love Dr. Northrup and would be happy to receive her books.

No more periods is a huge relief! I can do whatever I want whenever I want, without that worry and bother hanging over me.

What I didn't expect is how much more confident and whole I feel. I'm able now to focus on myself as a person, instead of as a stereotypical "woman" - if that makes sense. I find myself enjoying this period in my life. I only wish I'd discovered this sooner!

I guess I need to read your books to discover the joys of menopause. I am gaining confidence, as Julie said, as I get older. That's a real plus, when you deal with it your whole lifetime. I'm still searching for the pleasures and joys. I have been without periods since the age of 43 and am now 56 but that was  because of a hysterectomy. I appreciate your other books on menopause and have learned a great deal from them.

kgritts said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I just had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago. For the past 8 years I have suffered with extremely heavy periods and got to the point where I would bleed for 45 straight days. I was trying to hold off on surgery - hoping that I'd go post menopausal and end the suffering. But, it got to the point that I was so anemic that I was on bed rest and looking at blood transfusions. The doc and I decided the uterus just had to go. So, I'm just now beginning the pleasure of no more bleeding! My 21 year old daughter went out and bought me a whole new wardrobe of pretty underwear to replace my black ugly oldies (couldn't wear white with my problem). I am looking forward to a whole new life! More comfort. No worries. No birth control. Heck, I don't even have to have paps anymore! Whoopee!

NCgirl said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I would love to receive these books so I can figure out how to feel better.  My doctors haven't been able to figure out how to treat my symptoms.  I have seen your PBS special and think your advice is very forthright and you're also entertaining at the same time.  The worst thing for me is going from freezing to roasting in 20 seconds or less!

scriptwriterink said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I am approaching Menopause...and actually have found ways of coping by using a homeopathic tincture blended especially for menopause.  I get it from my chiropractor and once I tried it within a week I have had zero night sweats (now there's a whole lot of fun) and far fewer hot flashes.  Also helpful has been the introduction of a Progesterin cream that has really helped me feel more myself.  I love Dr. Northrups analogy that the hot flashes are really power bursts!  It's true, you just have to choose it.

Thanks for offering the books!

tinkerbelle04 said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I had to have a total hysterectomy when I was 29.  While I appreciate not having periods, life has been a roller coaster hormonally since then.  I only used hormones (Premarin) for a while, and I am glad now.  I needed something though.  I have used natural progesterone creams off and on, they didn't seem to help much either.  I am 55 now and I have almost no sexual feelings, and I know that is not normal....but it is what it is.  I will read the books, but not sure if anything can help me.  A lot of it is body image...having thyroid trouble and can't seem to lose weight even when trying.  Didn't mean to ramble on.....

Smoquii said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

LOL Saving on my heating costs, if I get cold I can just wait for the next hot flash!  Seriously, being freed from extremely painful cramps and excessive menstral bleeding has been great compensation for my personal saunas.  Being able to communicate with other women who are going through, been through or about to go through this rite of passage has been invaluable.  I am happy that we are much more open than my grandmother's and even my mother's generation.  Menopause is a great leveler, every woman is a source of help, advice, or can share a funny story or two.

JerZFox said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I certainly don't miss my periods!  Also, the hot flashes are a nuisance sometimes but come in real handy during the cold weather!

lajek said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

Like others, it's a pleasure to be at a point in my life where I'm confident and comfortable with who I am.  Experience is wonderful!  I'm also pleasantly surprised to find that I'm still attractive to men and enjoy sex as much or more than ever.  I also find my relationships with women supportive and authentic.  I'm able to much more fully embrace all of life.  What a gift.

bvicker said to lajek 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

My libido has simply soared, coinciding with my finally reaching menopause.  My periods finally completely stopped at age 55 without a single hot flash.  My long dormant sex drive, due to an uphappy marriage, suddenly rebounded with a vengence when we separated, I got back out there and started meeting new men.  It's true, I'm still attractive to men and my sex life is better than it's ever been, ever.

Stella_V said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I have a form of Muscular Dystrophy and crazy hormones made it so much worse. The best and most wonderful thing is that the hormones are not running all over the place now .... I now have a NEW NORMAL for me and I love it.

sandra said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I no longer have hot flashes.  I am so surprised that I have more intense sexual feelings than before.  I enjoy my body more and more relaxed about how i look.  I never miss that monthly visitor.  I look 10-12 years younger than I actually am and feel better than I did at 38.

DeBorahBeatty said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

After my hysterectomy in 1992, I was ecstatic. I felt wonderful, I was free bimonthly brutal periods. But since then, not so much. I've had my first broken bone, I have no libido AT ALL and that's a major frustration since I have always had a healthy appetite in that area. My weight refuses to stabilize and I haven't had a day when I felt "Well" in months. I'm sure this is all part of going through the process, but I'm waiting for the pleasure part.

Cindy said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

The pleasures of menopause, seems like an oximoron.  I can remember when I was younger that I couldn't wait until i did not get my period any more.  And yes, it is nice to not have the bloating, water weight gain and mess associated with having it. I also have fewer migraines than I had pre-menopause.  Yep, to me the biggest pleasure is not having todeal with having a period every 28 days.

chb831 said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

chb831  No more buying feminine protection is nice and worrying about accidental spotting on clothes.  Also not having to worry about unwanted pregnancy.  A product called ProFema has made my life and my husbands more bearable.  I have no mood swings or hot flashes.

salreardon said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

No more periods is the best things, no cramping, weight gain or bloating!   Haven't been bothered with hot flashes yet.

awwwwshux said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I went through menopause relatively early, around age 42, without a single hot flash, night sweat, or mood swing.  (Well, okay, maybe a mood swing or two, which I would've had anyway!)  But coinciding with this change was a new marriage and the kids moving out of the house!  What a terrific combination -- a new sexual interest and no eavesdropping kids to worry about!

lindarosenjack said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

i don't have any pleasure yet. i sweat like a pig from the time i get up untill the time i get up. i hate night sweats. can't sleep longer than a hour or so at a time. i'm either getting up to turn the fan off or on. great life.

paula eilertson said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I like no periods, noworry abou being late after sex. It has been pure hell too. Like a roller coaster ride up and down, and scary too!

Nancy said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I would love to read your books.  My hot flashes are gone - but now feel bloated and am trying to exercise more and eat better.  My husband and I have a great relationship - probably the best it has been for 26 years. Thanks for writing.  Will have to catch your PBS special.

vicky42000 said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

My pleasure in Menopause has been a feeling of lightness! No longer worrying about periods, spotting, cramps, getting pregnant, trying to get pregnant and it not happening. I feel more comfortable in my body! The hot flashes have slowed down, the insomnia is getting better, and I'm just happier with myself.

Gigi of seven said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I read Dr. Northrup's first book and had made a conscious decision that when I started menopause, I would take hormone therapy.  Then in 2000 I developed breast cancer that was estrogen-positive. At that point, I realize that my hormone decision was then taken out of my control.  To take estrogen meant that I could have a reacurrence of the cancer.  No hormones for me...I sailed through menopause without any difficulties.  I didn't have "flashes" no heat just wet perspiration;however, I was on Tamoxophen at the time and it can cause that.

My greatest pleasure is my "empty nest" and the time that I can spend with my husband, children and grandchildren. I am finally the liberated women that I always dream was inside.

tygerswife said to Gigi of seven 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

What pleasure in Menopause?  I have had NO pleasure, other than no more periods, sanitary napkins and Tampons (I was a heavy bleeder), I can wear white pants, with NO worries about spotting, no more migraines...

I got married for the first time at 48 years old.  I wanted to have ONE more baby, but that was not to be-- I developed severe menorhhgia, anemia and had to have two blood transfusions and almost died at one point!

When I had the hysterectomy, I lost my libido, tried the hormone patch, tried the shots in each hip every month for six months and finally went to hormone pills (estrogen and testosterone) still no libido though, and that has been very hard on my marriage!  I have dry skin, dry hair and my fingernails are very brittle!

Pleasure?  I would rather have my parts back!

Sheltiemum said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

I love not having periods!!  And the other surprising "perk" is that I no longer have to shave my underarms!!  That was a pleasant surprise.  I feel "feisty" and strong and don't miss the mood swings at all.  I had PMDD and that really sucked.

dancdiva said to VN Quotes 03/13/2009, 02:21PM new!

Well, I am turning 50 in a few months and I feel very free....My periods just stopped a year ago and there have been no hot flashes, no night sweats, no headaches and I feel great.  Not sure why, but I am not going to complain. I have always been estrogen dominant and am not taking any hormones.  The hardest thing was to be faced with the fact that I could no longer entertain the idea of children.  I didn't want to have any of my own but it was upsetting to have that decision made for me.  It hurt.

I have had to find my sexy again, mainly in my head.  I actually find that I have more sex drive now than before.  Not sure why....Now I just have to find a man to enjoy that with.

The gift of menopause is also that it has focused me on my life and what I want out of the other half of it.  I don't want to settle and I need less to be happy now.  My figure looks the same and I have a renewed energy towards health and happiness.  I teach dance and am not looking to retire any time soon.  Dr Northrup, Thank-you for being such a great inspiration for us all...God Bless.
