i am so afraid to see what god gave me ....i have been dieying my hair for 25 years ...when i see a woman with gray hair i cringe because i know that gray hair tend to make a woman look 10 years older...
and i don't like that at all...so for the time being i'll just keep doing what i have been doing and see what happen ..by the way you look good in salt and pepper hair....
I prefer to call it "Chemical Enhancement," but I, too, have decided not to dye my hair and am loving the silver highlights threaded through my dark blonde! I am not giving up my perms, though, and you can't make me! :-)
Actually Deborah,
Your hair color looks like it matches your eyes from your pic here. Looks great. I still dye mine because the grey is like a silver line all along my root area. That's it never goes grey anywhere else! BTW hats don't look good on me either LOL!!
Finally!! I am sure you are much happier for it. I have never coloured my hair and just the thought of doing all that up keep tired me out. Just think of the money you are saving too!
Deborah I stopped coloring my hair when my husband died. It took a while to grow out. I would never color it again I love my grey hair and get so many compliments from friends who do not have the courage to grow grey gracefully. I have a good cut and just wash and dry and ready to go. With grey hair we look good in blacks brown and even vibrant colors.
I've been using Natural Instincts by Loving Care, which is the only one I can find that I'm not allergic to. It kind of easy come, easy go, though. It goes on easily, and washes out quickly. Also, I've never been comfortable with the bad press hair dyes have gotten. That is, I sort of believe the bad press, but can't quite bring myself to go gray quite yet, but it's coming.
You took the words out of my mouth, that is my favourite product as well. Toasted Almond, the craziest I will get is to try a new shade.
Once when trying a new shade with Natural Instincts I ended up with purple highlights. This wasn't exactly what I was after but people said they liked it. Now that I'm a lot more gray I really hope not to repeat that experience. I'm using #78 Medium Golden Brown and would like to go a bit darker but when I called the 800 number for their "expert" advice, I spoke with what sounded like a teenage boy so I didn't feel very confident. Maybe I should post a question on this site. There must be some color experts out there.
I've seen your picture and can't imagine why you would want to cover that beautiful gray up. In my opinion, women age beautifully when they go natural. I don't understand why people feel the necessity to get plastic surgery on their faces. It makes them look like they're from some alien planet. I see these Hollywood stars and wonder if they really have any idea how bad they look after getting surgery done to themselves. It's almost like they either don't have a clue or are not paying attention to how the person who had surgery before them turned out. Keep your hair. It's beautiful.
I too stopped dying after almost 20 years. Started going gray before 20; grew it out once 10 yrs ago, was a nice salt/pepper (more pepper!), but dyed again cause my kids were little (4 & 6). Got tired of "racing stripes appearing after 2 weeks, color fade, etc. Just grew it out this past year and it's almost white! Tried low-lighting, then adding blond , but neither worked well for me. I think it's too white at 51, but oh well, I guess. I am trying to re-enter the job market and I worry that it might hinder me. Then I just say, Heck with it!!! I'm going to be me! I think it is harder (more of a surprise) for those of us who have dyed for years than those that just let their hair "age naturally" to begin with!
I quit dying my hair four years ago when I changed jobs. I decided the dark hair and wrinkles didn't look as good together as "Arctic Blonde". I feel more attractive now than I did when I paid big money for color and highlights.
And you are stunning. I tried growing my hair out. It got to pony tail length and I gave up. It was taking 40 minutes every morning, 3 appliances, and 2 products. Bah! I decided to do the Jamie Lee Curtis thing. Never been happier with my hair.
I just recently gave up the color and I am feeling liberated. I dont have much grey yet but I keep my hair very short( spikey on top) and find I don't notice they grey as much. My hair is very fine and thin and I worried about using color all the time.
You look beautiful Arctic Blonde!!! What a cute name for white/gray hair! It was tough to grow it out long, but I saw a model on TV with long gray hair and loved it. I had to promise my husband that I would cut it if it started looking witchy, which is what he thinks long grey hair looks like. No problem...I certainly wouldnt keep it long if it was unattractive. I have gotten so many nice replys and compliments on this site about my hair, I wouldnt change a thing at this point! Thanks to everyone for their responses!
YOu Go Girl!!! I never even started and I get more compliments on my salt and pepper than I ever did without the silvers! Be Proud and Gray!!
Good for you. I have recently done the same. Remember that Grey is Glamorous, and I do believe that. Think of all the money we are saving!
I forgot to say that the photo you see is of me at my 70th birthday party. My mother, 93, is with me. She has glorious white hair, as does my older sister, and I am waiting for mine to become whiter and whiter. I love it!
70!!!! You look so young!!!!
Thank you! More important, I feel young. I started playing golf at 63, water color painting at 68, and I fully intend (hopefully) to learn several more things before I pass on. Plus, I don't mind a few wrinkles and don't subscrib to the idea that we need to keep "touching up" our face, hair, etc., to keep up appearances. As the old adage goes, Beauty is as beauty does, and I try to live by that, rather than negative thinking about my appearance. Better to exercise regularly and think positive thoughts about yourself and everyone else (if you can manage that). Didn't mean to lecture!
AMEN!!! I have also decided to not color my hair anymore and see what happens! I will probably love it when it is grown out. I am so tired of the upkeep and the expense!! Wish me well!!
I purposely came to Vibrant Nation looking for a discussion about making the decision to stop coloring hair and this is exactly what I was looking for! (I knew I'd find it here :-) I just recently stopped coloring my hair. Figured it wouldn't be as much of a shock to let it start showing now as it might be if I waited til I was all gray. The last time I colored I switched to a more natural product called "water works". The color is mixed with water instead of chemicals, so I thought less toxic to use. . .it was supposed to be a light brown color but turned out pretty dark for me and not a very even coverage. I didn't like it, so, that was the decision maker. It turns out to be a blessing in disguise as my natural hair color is a bit darker than the original color I had been using. So as my hair with grays is growing out, the roots are not so glaring and that is helping with this transition. Currently my hair is fairly long - below shoulder length - and healthy looking, but I'm considering going shorter and having more of a style. Just think I'm going to miss being able to put it up quick on those hot summer days. But when I see some your pictures with such short styled haircuts - and you all look stunning - it makes me think I should go for it! We'll see. . . . .
Gail
I am like some of you, never having coloured my hair. I started going grey at 23, streaked it a few times. But after never recognizing myself leaving the salon, I gave that practice up - I just couldn't stand the schizophrenic feeling ... and I was going to pay for that feeling? No thank you!
My problem has more to do with length. My husband is head-over heels for Emmylou Harris, as am I admittedly. And as her hair greyed, she did not get rid of the locks - shorter maybe, but still on the long side. And she is stunning. So my hubby asked me if I would not consider growing my hair. This has been a veeeery long project, trying to decide whether to layer or to bob it. I'm still only down to almost touching my shoulders. I bounce from loving it to hating it and coming close to throwing in the towel. My hair is thick-looking because of the curl and frizz, but the hair shafts themselves are very thin. And it looks great and healthy and shiny and bouncy if I blow dry it straight. But therein lies the problem - when I apply a lot of heat to my hair, especially those ceramic curl brushes, my hair starts to yellow in quick order. I use a bluing shampoo and conditioner to keep yellowing agents at bay, but there is a limit to how much these bluing products can accomplish and they certainly cannot get rid of the slight burning effect of heat. And on the days I go natural, well, my hair is light and whispy with no shine, bounce or body, just a lot of frizz.
What's a girl to do? I am sticking with the PROJECT, becasue each time I threaten to cut it all off, my husband gets that far away look in his eyes - I can just see Emmylou sitting in those pools of green. I so want to please us both - I just hope I have the patience to see this ever-lengthening (pun intended) experiment to its natural conclusion :-)!
