How do I find a hairstyle that works for me? (I'm 60 with short hair but I'm hip and feisty and full of spunk. I don't want Aunt Matilda's do!)
responses (151)
Not always the best choice, and a stereotypical response!
true-from a hairstylist
shorter hair has the advantage of pulling the facial line and your observant eye; up. Short but featherey for softness is great-ifyou have the face for it, spikey is fun-sometimes you can get the same effect from the same haircut-with a good haircut and alot of product!
Totally agree!
sad, but so true
Hey, I'm 57 and feisty and spunky, myself. I recommend a soft, natural style rather than a stiffly sprayed one. Just tousle your hair to give it body and let it do it's thing naturally. But if you have fine-textured hair like I do, I use mousse on my damp hair, blow-dry it with my head upside-down, don't brush out....just finger tousle into place after using a styling balm or wax and VOILA!
I'm 57 too. That sounds like the hairstyle I want. I've had my day of long hair(I had the Farrah Fawcett look), sometimes it was a lot of fussing.I had very nice natural blonde hair, but menopause changed that.
I'm 57 too. My daughter is getting married in Sept. and I have short hair. It is layered with long side bang to the right. I am going to have my hairdresser do it for that day. I want it to have more body than when I do it.
my hair is very fine AND thin. i learned to dry it almost all the way upside down, then spray with hairspray.then roll in big vecro rollers.dry it a little more ,leave them in till i am ready to almost walk out the door.light spray again. more volume and fairly hassle free
helps also that my daughter is a hairstylist.she t do styles that are not too frumpy OR too young.
Thank you Lenora. I appreciate the hair suggestion. I, too, have fine, flat, thin hair. I can't wait to try your suggestion.
i found some velcro rollers at Ulta that have a thin layer of metal inbedded and this seems to help the heat to set the hair.and as long as i let them cool the hair gets an even better volume from that roller than plain velcro rollers.they were a little higher in cost, but i think they work.also if u have ulta in ur area, u can find coupons, etc.
Sounds like way way way too much trouble!
It sounds like you are real cute and can get by with this style! I would look like a deranged, escapee with that look. I would love it, otherwise. :)
What is a styling balm and do you have natural wave or curl to your hair?
this works but you have to have the proper cut, a good base first for it to work. I had the worst hair cut in my life 4 months ago and there was nothing I could do to make it look good until it grew. That is the only deficit to having a short hair cut.
I have been under such great stress, building a 2BIGHOUSE and women trying to take over my spouse, that I have lost 1/2 a head of hair.My hair used to be thick enough that it had to be thinned, now look where I've gotten myself. This sounds great, blow out and look like Tina Turner.
Did you mean to say house instead of spouse....I hope so because you
are too pretty to be worrying about someone taking over anything. Get your groove on girl.
How about an inverted bob. It's the same hairstyle that Victoria Beckham has.
This is a hairdo of Vidal Sasson from the 70s. It looks good from the back, but it usually looks stringy and unkempt from the front. I wouldn't advise it.
Let your hair grow at least to shoulder length and pull it into a pony....takes years off the face!
you mean the asymetrical bob?
from a hairstylist
ponytails are for kids and horses
Forget the long hair....a short pixie with spiky hairs will make you look hip!
I totally agree with you! Take a look at me..
Love that Look on You!!
Your hair is darling!! You are fortunate that you can pull off this look...not many can.
We both have simular styles. You look great!
Love the hair!! Need to see more eyebrows. IMO
I love long hair. I'm 60 and it's become my trademark. Pull it back, put it up, easy, no-fuss. The photo on the back cover of my book, "Boomerangst....." is a few years old, but the hair's still there!! You can see it at www.babyboomerangst.com/thebook.html

I agree with you, Judy. I have a round face and with some extra pounds, I look really fat with short hair. I love my long hair. My mom always made me wear short hair(from elementary thru high school) and I hated it. I wanted long hair so badly. So when I began working and making my own money at 16, I began to grow my hair out. So it is still sort of a rebellion - I won't cut my long hair. Plus I can do so much more with it.
Yes! it's all about the options. I've cut it many times over the years, and hated it--too much work to style it every day. Guess I'm just an old hippie...
Love the 'old hippie' comment. That's what my kids tell me 'cuz I like the long hair.

I am 59, and my hair is below my waist. Most of the time I just wear it up, no fuzz.
My story is the same, when young, my mother wanted my hair short, I hated it. I have worn it long now since about 16. I like the just wash and dry, without any curling, fuzzing or trouble.
I am known for the long hair and it is my trademark, but Mom, now 88 still tries to make me cut it. :-)
I am so glad to hear about women over 50 wearing their hair long. I'm 52 and it's down below my shoulders. I keep thinking I have to cut it because non of my local contemporaries have long hair. It's good to be a bit of a rebel.
I'm like you--I'm having so much fun with my hair. At 67--a first for long hair. My husband likes it too!

Well I'll tell you Koko - I married the first one twice and he did not like short hair on any girl, let alone me. Now the third one would absolutely freak out if I went to short hair. My hair used to be straight black; but I went to reddish brown, and then were fooling around one day and I got some blonde and I loved it. So now I have long hair to my waist almost - a nice shade of brown with blonde highlights. I'm 58 and it makes me look 15 years younger, especially when my styist does it in "I Dream of Jeannie" style.
One additional note to my hair color - just last Friday, I changed it back to my straight black color (it had been 5 years since the brown with blond highlights). I really love it (it's still long) and my husband said "Yes - you are back to looking like Cleopatra again." Would that I could look like Elizabeth Taylor, though!
You go girl!
I love long hair as well, I am too thin and my face is as well. I can't pull off long hair it makes me look much older than I am and makes my face look sooo much thinner and longer. I wore my hair long as a child my mom wold braid a pig tail on either side of my face and with the tan I had in the summer the Indian blood definitely showed through. I have tried growing it long several times wearing different styles and it just reminds me long hair is not for me. I ENVY all of you that can wear it long.
I agree totally, no long hair!!!! Going for my cut tomorrow, it takes years off your face the shorter and spiker you go, the better, and forget about the gay thing, I have a wonderful woman not gay) that knows how to cut, that's KEY... just keep trying different people till you find the right one!!!
I LOVE your haircut! For the most part, I think short hair is most becoming with gray hair. I've been coloring mine for the past 10 years, even got to be a strawberry blond (from almost black hair going gray) but am tired of coloring. So had a hairdresser color my hair dark with light hi-lights and am in the process of letting my natural hair grow in. This is NOT fun! I let my hair grow longer when it was light (still short though) but will be going back to something like yours once it's gray. I also love to just wash and fluff dry with a bit of product. Actually that's all I do now altho' my hair is longer than normal for me. Do you have some natural wave to your hair? I think it looks chic and smart.

Hey Cheryl, post a photo of your beautiful face and then we can give you advice that suits you! FTR, a pixie hairstyle sounds hip to me :D
I agree with you. Cheryl needs to give us more info to make a suitable recommendation!
Get a top-notch stylist to go over styles with you...maybe go through some pictures with you....and find something that suits your facial shape! Or take a look at some of the more flattering styles sported by older celebrities. Jamie Lee Curtis and Glenn Close can hardly be called Aunt Matildas....Hey, it's an adventure finding a new look! Have fun and enjoy!!!!!
Hi! I am brand new to this site, so bear with me...my hairstyle is kind of like what you are describing. Take a look and tell me what you think. juabq
Very cute and spicy! Looking good. LadyB, the oldest of this Vibrant bunch!
Your hair is great, similar to mine!
Yes! I love your hair! That suits you and looks smart.

That's exactly what I want but hairdresser always cuts too short. How do you describe your haircut so I can relay that to my hairdresser? Love it!
when u see some one that has just the hsircut u have been wanting
take a photo (yes ask first)
then get the name of the stylist and the salon's name
call and make an appointment
i just got mine cut, i show her my photo
she cut it just a shade too short
but it will grow to the correct length in no time
expalining does not always happen
your blue might be a different blue to her
photos r great
or go through the hair style magazines
and buy the one which has a style u love
and show it ti the stylist
this comes from a very old stylish (that be me)

Go to a wig shop and try on some great styles and colors..even take the plunge and buy a quality synethetic wig..prices are reasonable, easy care, light weight, fashion forward...Just don't tell the shop owner that you aren't buying because once you try it you might just buy it..Enjoy
This is the most fun too! I did it a couple time, but still couldn't part with my long hair. Whatever you do, Have Fun!!!
I too have long hair and really don't want to part with it. I went thru chemo 20 years ago and went for over a year with no hair and this is my "fight back". I'm sure I'll get to a place where I can let it go, but at this point it's my outer symbol of a long, hard won fight. I wish there was something I could do with it to make it more age appropriate without cutting off the length. I did have it cut on my 10 year anniversary of my last chemo and donated it to locs of love. My 20 year anniversary of last chemo is coming up and not sure what I want to do, if anything. Any advice?
I'm 2.5 years since last chemo & I know what you mean about your hair being your fight back. I didn't lose all of my hair, only about 75%, but I cut it to pixie length & kept it there for a year after chemo. It's now just beyond my shoulders. It is not a good look any longer & I'm sure it ages me, but I'm not ready to let go yet. Good luck in your quest for an answer.
Maybe one of those long shags that are back in. It is long with feathering around the face. That way your getting shorter hair, which is good for looking youthful. But long hair at the sides and back can be beautiful. You can also put it on your head, which is what I did.

When I have asked about this hairdo--the eyebrows shoot up and A MULLET???? they don't seem to know about a long shag--and I loved mine several years ago. I have asked big city upscale salon and small town sylist about it so I just stick with my 'bob'.
Try a layered look. That way you won't have to lose the length. That's what I do. I love long hair and wouldn't part with it for all the tea in China. Just because you hit 'a certain age' doesn't mean you have to go with short hair. LONG LIVE LONG HAIR!!
My hair is really curly. I've kept it short for years, never letting it grow long before when I kept it curly. I used to straighten it. Now, it's to my collarbone, but only looks shoulder length. I look years younger. I think what you pick should be determined by what you've already had.
I'm a hairstylist from so. cal. I like to discover my clients personality (I take time to talk with them), then I design to the shape of face and body and type of hair. keeping in style and up to date takes seeing your stylist often. now fashion changes so quickly that sometimes it is easier to change color than length Major fashion changes twice a year choose a stylist who goes to advanced education at least once a year. please let me know if I can help further, louise r
Boy, I wish you were in the Denver area! I would LOVE to find someone that would actually do that here!!!
me too! My hair has gone pfft since I moved here from San Francisco.
Can you move to Creston, British Columbia, Canada? I need you!!!
Where in SO CAL, I am in Lancaster neard edwards AFB?

Hi Louise, Where in so cal are you? I am in Lancaster, near Edwards AFB.

My hair is curly. I would love a curly style that I can manage. I can't just let it dry. Too frizzy. It is about jaw length. I bought Hawaiian Silky, since the Afro-Amer. women in my place suggested it. I'm Italian, but my hair is about as close to Afro as you can get. Quite kinky curly, but at my age, it is really unmanageable. I do use a curling iron, but the top is flat. Also, I dye my hair and now the roots are not taking the dye. It is bright orange! My hair is dark brown with lots of red. HELP!
Get mine cut with lots of points in it so that it is sort of a pixie. Can just dry it and shake it every morning, love it that way. Easier at 60 than it was at 30.
hey cherryl hi i am hairdresser how about a long halk it is funk an spice barbara
did you mean 'fall?"
I love my short hair. It's assymetrical and I get compliments on it. But I've done lots with my hair thru the years. First, did you ever have short hair that people commented positively on? If so, go back to it if your face is the same basic shape as then. (as in not heavier, less jawline..
If there is a women with a fabulous haircut compliment her and ask her for her hairstylist --the stylish may just be onto something. Just make sure its something she reccommends for you-not cookie cutter. Have fun! And also consider color as well. Get advise and let it brighten your complexion! Enjoy!
Go to Virtual hair and makeovers. They will have you download a picture of yourself that you can try different hair styles, colors, different makeup, and it's a lot of fun also. See what you would look like as a red head or whatever. The old fashioned BOB is still in but one of the more fashionable right now is stacked in back then longer on the sides so it swings and flows and has movement. I would say=-change your color. I do this every time I am feeling down and it charges me. Be a blond, or a redhead- that's what I am going to be next. I found a good set of hair products called Kronos-it has a free trial. Try it, just be sure and cancel before the trial is over or it's expensive. It helps liven up your hair a little.
Look through magazines and cut out pages of hairstyles that you like, and look at pictures of yourself over the years. A hairstyle that is right for you will emerge.
1st and foremost determine your face shape, then look for styles that compliment your face structure.
i wanted the spiky look and nobody knows how to do it... i went on a cruise and a girl from Norway did it but then my husband did not like it... but i always do a cut that i can fix with just a blower. So my niece blew dried it downward and it looked great. This is the picture. I hate hair around my face, but i hate to admit it, those hairstyles make me look the best.
forgot to tell you, i also have very curly hair, very kinky if i do not blow dry it, but found the keratine treatments and now do them myself. It lasts up to 4 months and the hair is shiny, silky and straighter so it is very easy to blow dry, it takes a lot of less time.
I just let my hair grow out when I was in my late 50's, I think long hair makes you feel younger, I play alot of tennis and just put it in a long braid and wear it in a pony tail and put it up sometimes. I get alot of complements on my hair and it is colored a light ash blond color because of the white/gray of my natural color. I use color silk so I have to get 2 because of the lenght of my hair, but it only cost me six dollars once a month. I am 64 and find it is easier to keep this way and it does not look bad.
I love my long hair also. They used to say that you couldn't wear long hair when you get older.... HAH! Not so. It definitely feels younger and sexier. I had short hair growing up and when my kids were younger. I sometimes miss the short sassy look but not enough to cut it.
You look great in long hair. I also like my hair long, and have, all my life, had it long. Fortunately it's relatively thick and this works well for me. It's "my" look.
For a style, I prefer NO style. Think: Susan Sarandon and her dishelved look. Very sexy, and can look very classic, chic and neat when pulled up into something like a French twist. In my opinion, if you have the hair (not thin or wispy or fragil), let it grow!
From a ponytail to a long braid, I've never met a man who doesn't think long hair is the best. I can get it out of my face, too, whereas short hair needs attention. I haven't the patience for styling anymore...
short hair needs attention? Not for me... 15 mins tops n the morning.
Sorry, but long hair is faster than that. I had long, got it cut, wish I hadn't.

I decided about a year ago to let me super curly hair grow. It's been the best decision I've ever made about anything having to do with my "style". I was always uptight because my hair wasn't long and silky. Now it's long and just does it thing and I love it. I decided awhile back not to be so concerned about what everyone else thinks. Michele AKA bodaciousboomer.com
Hummingbird...if I looked as good as you do with long hair, I'd cancel all my future appointments. One of my girlfriends who is a life long Floridian and lives, virtually, at the beach says many women start to grow out their hair when they move down.
Good question. I color my hair. Also, I have tried different styles either when I see a style I like on a younger person or in a magazine. I like a style that looks good on me, and is easy to maintain. One that I am comfortable with.
I also color my hair-my stylist does it because I ruined my hair years ago. I have a wide face-so my hair is chin length to camophlage my face. However, I still sweat a lot so I do put it up sometimes. I'm ready for a new style!
When I moved here I called the local beauty supply company, and asked for the top hair salons in the city. They advised me on the best stylists and colorists depending on my interest.
Hi, Cheryl Lu! There are a couple of ways to approach this: first, what age do you appear to be? If you appear to be 40, then look through some hair magazines and find some women who appear to be 40 and have styles you like. Or, find a celebrity that resembles you, in your age group, that has a great "do;" it'll probably look good on you, too. Find a hairdresser that thinks like you; in other words, she should be around our age, but is still hip and trendy. GO FOR IT!!! And always remember...it will grow back if you don't like it!
After 45 women should have a short hair style. You will look younger if you have highlights. Also soft tones: ligh makeup and soft colors for your libs. Your eyebrowns should not be round and not point down. Look your face shape in celebrities and politicians pay attention to their skin color and the colors that they wear. You can get a good idea and how you will look good and younger. Maryzabel
Why do women over 45 have to have short hair? I work with a 47 year old who has long hair and she looks great! I think it totally depends on your face shape, your personality and the hair color.
I read recently that for a lot of women over 50, having a lighter hair color looks best because you are probably starting to grey already and the skin tone is changing, too. I didn't believe so went with an auburn color. WRONG CHOICE! One it grows out, I'm going to a dishwater blond - what I wore when I was younger and looked great in.
Boy, you are topping me in my tracks.I had beautiful long hair until I was 54. I wore it up in a variety of different styles. Lots of compliments. Now I have an inverted bob, love that too. I have no plan to ever have short hair. That's not ever in my plans.
Boy, that idea is something our mothers passed on to us. Long hair , if you have the right style is beautiful. There is no set rule for our hair. Each one to his own syle. Hair is so important to us, make sure we are happy with our own style and color. Be open to other's choices.
Totally agree - I was told that many years ago by an aunt and my Mom. I am now over 60 and would never wear really short hair - depending on the time of year mine is long (winter) or bobbed (summer) and is a champagne colour - I am often told I look about 40 so it must be working. No rules apply except avoiding the tight curly Granny grey cut so many had twenty years ago when they were over 45.
The poodle do--the tight curly perms. ; ) My mother always wore that and wanted me to 'just get your hair CUT'.
I love the longer hair women wear today. Mine is baby fine and takes only a puff of air for it to go flat so I usually 'twig' it up.

I'm getting into long hair, myself. I wasn't able to grow my hair as a teen, and it finally got a chance to be healthy between 25 to now (at 49). I find that it's easier to work with my hair now that it's longer. I used to have to use things that were damaging to my hair when it was shorter. (Curling irons and blow dryers would break my hair off.) I can even wear my hair so that it looks like it short (in a fake bob). So, I'm having fun with the flexibility that I have now. It's probably because I'm more informed of how to work with my hair now, after so many years, and I'm more relaxed with being me.
I have always vowed never to be stuck in an old lady rut with my hair nor try to retain my youth by wearing the one from high school or college! So many woman have great hair but are too afraid to try anything new or only go to a hair salon where the older lady "do" is a factory turnout!
I walked into a trendy young salon and just asked to watch for a while and then eyed the work of 3 or 4 people as they worked on at least 2 clients. I look for the cuts and colors being very current (but not wierd so and how the stylist was interacting with their clients. Then I picked one! She listens to what I think I want as well as show her pics and discuss colors right for my skin tone and age (highlightes and lowlightes work really well so you can have a natural look but evolve into other colors shades) then she tells me what she thinks of my ideas and we rehash it based upon the realities of my hair.....then WE Agree and GO FOR IT!
I wore my same long hair and the colors were way too dark until I became adventuresome and tried a few inches and saw my face appear then my jaw line show up... then I went shorter then longer and always telling my stylist what I thought. And, if her color is too dark I tell her and she isn't offdended.
Too many woman are afraid of their stylist and don't tell them what they think....you are paying them and they really want to do a great job if they are any good. And hair does grow so why not enjoy seeing how you can change your look. I am taking a very nice slick Posh duo to a short edgy one this week...all the layers I worked so hard to grow out are being chopped off edgy and fun...and I can start over again if I want ... ENJOY
I've noticed that as we age many of us end up with either "old" lady haircuts (usually an old bob or a helmet of curls). Or, we resort to a modified man's haircut with the hair trimmed up around the ears. I know it's easier, but personally I'm fighting it. Younger women have longer hair. I spend a lot of time trying to keep my hair healthy and moderately long, but relaxed and fun. I can put up a short ponytail to walk or go to the gym, and I can have loose curls for dressy times.
I'm not sure that I have the answer, but I'm in support of resisting the "old" lady styles.
Look at the short, curly/wavy style in the latest j.jill catalog. I'm 66 and taking my catalog w/me when I go to the salon next week.
Find someone that has a fabulous haircut and find out who their stylist is. Before you go buy a few hairstyling books and pick a few you think might look good on you and then make an appointment to see the stylist. You can go onlin and look at salons and the reviews the stylists get. Don't skimp or try a bagain haircut...go somewhere special.
That's a great idea Cheryl!
Get a picture of Sharon Stone and take it to your stylist. Short, spikey hair is very hip. Get some Aquage products and style with your fingers. Don't tease or smooth the hair.
Remember you are not Sharon Stone! Every one is not going to look like her with short hair.
Sorry, but not all of us have Sharon's bone structure!
I'm very interested to hear what you find out on this question. I also have shorter hair and all the books and magazines carry are your 20 year olds with actresses as their impractical models. I'd love to see real women of an older age in some magazine that would show some cute styles for a little bit older women.
I usually ask for a 'Jamie Leigh Curtis' haircut now, but not easy to get that spikey look to work all the time. . I Where are all the products to brighten up gray/white hair...several yrs. ago there were at-home hair colosr for gray/white hair - where did they go? I finally had my hair highlighted with blondish highlights, but not exactly me. None of us want to look 'like our Grandmas'....even when we ARE Grandmas!
Whatever makes you feel good about yourself! I had my hair hair very long going thru my 20's and 30's then I went really short and spiky! In the past few years I've been letting it grow out and it's a little longer than shoulder length. Good to pull up, play around with different styles or just leave it down to blow in the breeze. I don't let fashion trends determine what I'm doing with my hair. It's whatever makes me feel good about myself.
What a great attitude. That's what all this is about. Have fun with your hair! Feeling good with whatever style you chose.
you find a stylist you like and tell them you want something hip and updated and to do what they think would look good. I have found that to be the best way to get a great haircut and color. Go for something that can be wash and wear and maybe some syling with a brush or flat iron. Good luck and when you find what you want post some pics.
Wear it short, add gel and spike it! That's what I did when my hair was growing back in after chemo. My husband and family loved it but after being bald I yearned for my long hair!
I am 60 and have had a short spike for the past several years. It seems to work well with my silver hair and I don't think I could do any other hair style now.
I am 62 and have a very short punk style cut, it is very easy and flattering to my face shape. All you do is wash it and comb it with your hair product and your fingers.
From a Wyoming lady
Pixie styles or spiky stiles are my favorites. After a bi-lateral mastectomy, I was bald. That's when you learn 'your hair is not your life'. However, it can be a fun extension of who you are. Go for playful. My hair came back in white/gray, a real surprise to me as I had colored it for years and years. I love wash 'n wear hair, but I did get some blonde highlights in it, that gave me a lift. My big complaint is the lack of products for gray haired women, when will these companies figure out that we are here - in great numbers!
I went to a hairstylist today. She saved my hair from an horridous at home dye job. She also perked up my hair style which is a pageboy, longer in front, with bangs. It is versatile so I can have dress it up or not. The thing about it, this was a twenty year old girl. She achieved what many others haven't, a hair style I love. She made my hair fresh and hip, but remembered I am 57, and she was sooo young. So don't dismiss the young stylists.
I'm 56 and have had grey hair for several years. It is a pretty white color that people love.....I get compliments on both color and cut all of the time. I found several pictures of Sharon Stone (who is the pixie/spiky queen to me) and took it to my stylist. She will not cut my hair in a style that is not flattering to my face, however, she agreed with me that I could pull it off. I just dry and finger comb with some pomade. I use a root lifter by Paul Mitchell before drying. She toldl me when drying, rub my hair in circular motions to give it volume. I don't like flat, I like poofy but not spikey. I want volume with softness and this works for me. I recently went to New York City on a visit and was stopped on the street my many, who told me that they loved my hair. If you are getting compliments....stay with it!
I like my hair medium lenght put back, away from my face. It is so easy for me,
Hi Cheryl,
Did you see Meryl Streep's hairdo in "The Devil Wears Prada"? It's sohisticated, sexy, feminine and very fashionable. All you need to do is make sure you get a good cut so it falls into place easily. Google the name of the movie and you'll see photos of Meryl.
Hi Cheryl,
If you can't find a photo, let me know and I'll email you one.
I am 64 and spunky and fiesty as well. I have a really short and spikey hairdo and love it. My granddaughter thinks I have a boy haircut, but her hair is long. I love the ease of the short cuts and don't care what anyone else thinks. I think I look soooo good! I would look around and if I see someone that has a cut you would like, go up to them and ask where they get their hair cut. That's how I found mine hairdresser!
Totally dependent on your type of hair, ie, thick, coarse, thin or fine. My hair is thick and I prefer it short. This short layered cut is awesome. I turn my head upside down and dry for the most part. Back up and it's a few quick flips on the back with my round brush and I go! Easy. I'm 54 and still enjoy looking young. Even my 13 year old says this is the way to go! LOVING life!
Well, I am pushing 60 and looked like a hag with long hair at 20, so I've worn my hair very short (Jaimie Lee Curtis short). It's easy, it's me. That's what the key is. I also have a great hair stylist who is very honest with me!
i feel the same way. i am 68.but i dont oke, feel,or act like a 68 year young person. actually i love Kate +8 's haircut. stipped a gal in the store the other day, and asked where and who did her hair. i loved the cut. i am actually thinking i will go get it cut that way, today i wear a victoria posh haircut.
should i ?? hmmm
I am 51 and I have the haircut that is shorter in the back and longer in the front. I love it, and I don't see why you couldn't have it; you are not much older than me.
Take care,
Catherine
I AM 56 AND JUST RECENTLY LOST 100. THROUGH THE PROCESS, MY BEAUTIFUL, THICK, WAVY HAIR STARTED TO FALL OUT IN HANDFULLS. I HAD BEEN ADVISED THAT THIS WOULD PROBABLY HAPPEN SO IT WASN'T A TOTAL SURPRISE. BUT REGARDLESS, IT SURE WAS A SHOCK TO SEE MY CROWNING GLORY A MESS OF DAMAGED, LIMP HAIR. I WENT TO "A" STYLIST (NO ONE I HAD EVER BEEN TOO..., MY DAUGHTER'S PERSON)AND TALKED W/HER ABOUT MY OPTIONS. AS MUCH AS SHE HATED TO SAY SO, SHE RECOMMENDED I PRETTY MUCH CUT IT ALL OFF...VERY SHORT ...IF I WANTED TO GET BACK TO THE HEALTHY GROWTH.
I FOLLOWED HER ADVICE AND GOT IT CUT TO ABOUT 1" LONG IN MOST PLACES AND SHORTER AGAINST MY NECK AND WISPY IN THE BACK. ON TOP OF THE HAIR LOSS ISSUE, I WAS AFRAID TO HAVE IT COLORED FOR FEAR MORE WOULD FALL OUT SO IT ALSO HAS GRAY IN IT NOW. THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON THAT BUT I WILL PROBABLY HAVE IT COLORED WHEN SHE TELLS ME IT IS HEALTHY ENOUGH.
ANYWAY, FOR THE FIRST MONTH, I HATED IT!!!! AND I MEAN H A T E D IT. I CRIED EVERY MORNING BEFORE I LEFT FOR WORK; FELT SO SELF-CONCIOUS. SHE ALSO ADVISED THAT SHE RAZOR CUT IT TO ADD SOME TEXTURE WHICH I ALSO HATED!!!! BUT... THAT WAS A MONTH AGO AND NOW IT HAS GROWN IN JUST ENOUGH THAT IT LOOKS SPUNKY AND FIESTY AND KIND OF PUNKY. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I FEEL DARING AND SASSY MUSSING IT UP W/SOME WATER AND PRODUCT IN THE MORNING AND HEADING OUT THE DOOR. AND...THE LITTLE STRANDS OF GRAY LOOK LIKE HIGHLIGHTING MORE SO THAN GRAY.
I FIND THE PUNKIER I "FIX" IT, THE BETTER I FEEL. I AM NOT SURE I WILL EVER GROW IT LONG AGAIN...LOL
SHORT HAIR ROCKS!!!!
Why should we wear short hair after 50??? Now, since I do not have kids around, I have more time to take care of my hair. I do not want to cut it. I wear it a little long. Besides most women around 50's and 60's cut their hair and they look less femenine and old.
well it may be just me but i like short hair never could stand having long hair felt like birds were nesting in
it!!!!
Long hair. Short hair. I recently let my hair grow long. Everybody I know loved it. I just cut it short again because that's what I like.
Who cares how this person or that person thinks you should wear your hair. I think that includes husbands, but again, that's just me.
What makes you feel good? Wear it. If you make a mistake, change it. It's hair. It grows.
I found a fabulous new stylist about a year ago who transformed my style. My hair is thick and fine and she now cuts and colors it for me in such a way that I can easily manage it myself with a blow dryer and a straightening iron (which takes longer to type than it does to do). I've never had so many compliments on my hair as I have in the past year, and frankly, I've always had compliments. They've just ratcheted way up since I found this new stylist.
I can't sing her praises loudly enough. I think that's the ticket whether you want long, short or in-between: put yourself in the capable hands of an expert, and stay with her as long as the compliments keep coming in!
look up your face shape they give some ideas for short, medium, and long hairstyles on the internet. i looked up short hairstyles
and went from there!!!!!!
My hair in the front has become very thin (nearly bald) and the short punky wig I wear now has dropped years from my appearance. I only wear it when I leave my house or someone's coming to visit and don't give it a thought. Incidentally, I cut my real hair off very short and frosted it pale pink with some stuff called Manic Panic. I smile at myself whenever I see my hair in the mirror and no longer care if it's thin. It amuses me to see purple-tressed goth kids at the grocery store and wonder what they would think if they knew what was under my short auburn wig. Maybe I'll try green on St.Patrick's Day.
I say we spend too much money and energy on our hair. I have always had good hair but when I was in high school I got sick of people saying how they liked my hair. So I cut it short.
I don't know what happened to that confident girl because when I started working I became obsessed with looking a certain way.
I have invested so much money in perms and color so I would look "good" in my working life. It was such a hassle, perming, then coloring, then cutting and starting all over again.
When I had cancer I will never forget a lady that was getting radiation treatments the same time I was. She had very short hair all dyed different colors. Everyone who came in laughed and commented on her hair and she said " might as well have fun" She was dying.
I have short straight hair cut to fall as it grows ,oh yes I still color it. I'm not that brave to let the color go, but
I have given up the perms and working so hard to look a certain way when I leave the house. The older I get the more natural I want to be.
If I needed a wig I would wear on in a flash. very practical. I bet you look fabulous
I find that every year i have less and less hair. My hair is so thin and yes balding in the front as you say. I have been considering going to a wig store and getting myself a wig because I am so self concious about the thinning hair. I have it short and it looks okay and my husband says it isnt so noticeable..but you know how it is, we see it so it is noticeable.
I think this being a new year and all, I am going to do just that,,,I worked a ton of overtime this last week and maybe I will take some of that money and go get myself a nice wig. the other problem I will have is that people will know for sure its a wig because it will be different than my own hair..ugggh
Deanna, I looked soooo much better with my wig that everyone who knows me (not family, but everyone else) said that I looked really rested and wondered if I'd "had something done" to my face. They actually didn't realize that it was my hair that was different. Lol! My wig is synthetic and all I have to do is shake it a little and put it on and go. I love it and have saved a fortune in hair product. If it's good enough for Dolly Parton, it's good enough for me. ((hugs)) Lin
Thank you Lin. I think I will bite the bullet and do this also. It is probably my own self that thinks that people notice things..how vain am I lol...I bet if I get a wig similar to my style and maybe a tad longer...nobody will notice and if they do, eventually they will have forgotten. I wanted to go grey naturally also and stop with the hair dye since apparently it causes hair loss..this will be the ideal way to go!
I've found that spikey, uneven works best for me - It's unexpected on someone my age (60) and I get tons of compliments but my problem isn't the style - it's the stylist! First I have to convince them I can wear this - they are always surprised afterwards that it looks so great. Unfortunately, consistency is the issue I have to deal with. Getting them to cut it the same way in subsequent visits is difficult - they want to go back to a more - in their minds - age appropriate style and I end up looking like Aunt Matilda. I love my short spikey hair but keeping it cut that way is difficult. I'm about ready to take the scissors to it myself after my most recent inconsistent cut. What can I say to the stylist to get her cooperation? She's always so busy talking that she's not listening! And yes, I've already changed stylists - 3 in the past 2 years and I tip VERY well LOL.
Hi Cheryl....Whatever you do, you need to go with the shape of your face. If you're thinking of going short, take a picture of what you would like. I think the big mistake that women make is what they "think" they're describing to their stylist isn't always what the stylist "hears". You have to be realistic. Your hair type, texture, your face all have to come into the equation so that picture may not be exactly what you get. I personally think as we age long hair drags your face down and makes you look older, but that's just me. Color is also another way to make the change. HIghlights, lowlights are a great change. And EYEBROWS!! They frame your face and make you look younger (another big mistake that older women make). Try to do the same shade as your base color. Good luck...Hope you find a fabulous cut!!......K
Check out Kris Kardashian(Jenner) or Meryl Streep's hair in "It's Complicated." Both look great on women our age!
LOL....I am 65 this year (OMG!) and my hair is long and straight, light reddish blonde. I have worn it this way most of my life ~ EASY maintenance ~ trim occasionally, keep it squeaky clean, conditioned ~ people NEVER guess my age ~ and I am often taken for late 40's ~ but NEVER does anyone think I am 65. Oh ~ and my boyfriend is 42.........lol......yep, I am lucky I guess....but that is what works for me!
I wear my hair short (I am 55) and I was told by a hair stylist that the older you get, the younger your stylist should be.....
That is my stylist thought on hair. I just got mine cut again today by a really neat young man. It is really cute and spiked with it kind of down on sides and bangs swept to the right side. I love it. I have worn a spike for most of the time since 1985 and got more compliments on it than I ever have any other style. I was blessed with the silver platinum hair like my Mom but without make up on I look all washed out. Of course my latest pics on my web site, I have auburn hair. Oh well, that's how I am. Always changing the color but pretty much stay with the style.
Hi There,
I have a hairdresser that I trust and she knows my hair and my lifestyle. I look to her for trendsetting styles and her professional opinion. I have driven out of town to have her cut my hair for the past 15 years. I get a few different styles a year based on the length I want and ease of maintaining the style from home. I let her do her thing because she is the expert! I have never been disappointed. My hair has great colour and shine, usually a trendy or classic bob cut. I am always complemented on my hair ..a testiment to her abilities. A good hairdresser is a just a necessity and they don't have to give $300.00 haircuts...I have many friends that are getting $300.00 haircuts and colours and my hair quite frankly looks better and is better cut for a fraction of the money. There are lots of great hairdressers out there! Find one that loves to cut hair..that is the basis for a great look...
I'm with you - keep going back to one that looks good and feels comfortable but feels dated. What to do?
I am 62 and have kept my salt-and-pepper hair fairly short for years. This winter I decided to let it grow to help keep my neck warm -- and just for the heck of it. I found that I love the feeling of my hair swinging when I move my head and blowing when I'm outside in a breeze. That makes me feel young! And I think my hair looks pretty good too. I think I'll keep it longish for awhile. Variety is the spice of life!
The secret is really find a good hair stylist....I live in Los Angeles and once went to a very high fasion salon and the hair cut was $300 - can you believe it...I looked great but cannot afford that - but went back to my old stylist and asked him if he could follow the lines - he can but it was never the same...a good cut and good color....
