As a writer of several how-to books on jewelry making, back in 2007 - I wondered where the how-to book was on dating for people our age... but now I see there are several, including one titled "New Tricks for Old Dogs" - written by a guy. So I do think there's more information and tips out there. But one thing I would say is that we have to use a different approach from that used by the younger set. Once I wrote to a guy just to suggest that he change one of his photos with a silly hairstyle (I think he thought it was funny.) but we actually met and had a very friendly conversation. There are men out there who are great but ... in desperate need of a good editor to delete cliches, a photographer to correct bad shots, or social adviser to suggest readings such as "Social Intelligence". (I actually told one MD that he needed to read that book.) And surprisingly, that initial gentle critique has led to several good friendships...

Hi Hawk Lady,

I hear you! : )

When I was 54 I had a partial face lift and it has been great! I had a decade of 'looking ten year younger", just like the doctor promised! I have noticed things falling a bit in, recent years, and am more accepting. Let's 'face' it, time will march on and we cannot stop it. I do the best I can to look and smell good, but there's only so much I can do. I'm an old lady! Lol

Fortunately, my hubby (who is nine years younger) seems to love me more for 'me' than what I look like! He thought the face lift was pretty silly, but I think he enjoyed my new look!

One other thing, I did the face lift for me and no one else. I did it even after some family and friends were against it (I found a top notch surgeon). It took courage, but I have never been sorry for my decision.

Well, good luck to you!

As women our style is constantly evolving...men get to stay the same, maybe just up a size or two. My husband still has ties from before we were married!!! And the truth is, they still look fine. I clean out my closet every six months.

Yes Vonnie, that is my husband, and thank you for saying he's handsome - I have to agree! He's also a good sport, letting me poke fun at him on the internet for everyone to see - but I think he's actually amused by it all.

Monday through Friday he's very nicely dressed. He just collapses on the weekend sometimes!

Good advice. I have been thinking about it for a while and I think I hurt her feelings a few times. She makes crafts and needlepoint pictures. Now while I appreciate all the hard work she puts into them, they are not my style at all. She has given me so many and I mean a lot and expects me to put them all over my house. She has made pictures for my teens as well and they don't appreciate them. I have told her that I have put them away for the kids as they will most likely hang them in their homes when they are older.
I have a few hanging in my bedroom but they don't match my furniture in my living room. It's very modern and I like abstracts not needle points of flowers and animals. I understand many people like these but I don't.
So, if I don't put up everything she has made me and this could fill all the walls in the house, then I can't have pictures from my fathers home.
She is the type of personality that if you don't like what she likes or makes than she makes you pay. She has always been like this with me. As a teenager she would take me out clothes shopping if I didn't like what she picked out for me than I wouldn't get anything. I ended up getting a job and buying my own. She tries this with my daughter, continues to buy her clothes on her birthday and my daughter will not wear any of it.
At Christmas she makes handmade cards and tells me I should put them in frames. She loves praise and gives hand made gifts with strings attached. She wants me to hang her pictures so when I have people over they will all say "oh what beautiful pictures, who made those" really, she is very insecure but comes across as a very strong personality.
Anyway, I am going to let it go. We have not talked about it much. She had someone come over from an auction house and they said she wouldn't get much for what she has. She was very upset about this. If she buys something 50 years ago for $100 she thinks it's worth millions today, it's not. To her my father's family heirlooms are there to sell, to me they are their to keep in the family.

Iwas a perpetually thin person for the first half of my life. Then I wasn't. Now I am again. For me to stay this way (with my new attitude and no longer aching knees), I now have to think about what I eat. I developed lactose intolerance, and that has forced me to rethink all I eat even more. Here are some of the ways I've coped:

Fresh fruits and veggies are my new best friends. I eat them cooked and raw, and mixed into things. Any time you look at my plate, one half to three quarters of it is produce. If there is protein, it is a moderate portion, usually also of the lean and healthy type.

I have cut way down on processed foods. Many contain milk by-products, which make me ill. Fast foods are also packed with whey, and the deep-fried side of it doesn't agree with me any more, either.

Sugar is really not good for me. I can honestly look at a doughnut now, and I feel queasy. My sugar comes from fresh fruit, and I have leaned to like the tangy, more subtle sweetness more than the cloying, overwhelming sweetness in many processed foods.

I have learned to whip up quick, delicious, fresh, wholesome foods, with herbs and seasonings that enhance their flavors even more. It's amazing what you can make into a great salad, with a decent dressing, and some fresh mixed greens. Or you can roast veggies in your oven with cooking spray, or a light drizzle of olive oil, or out on the grill.

I cut restaurant portions in half, and half the second part for lunch the next day. Or put it on a salad.

I make big pots of soup on Sunday, and have soup for lunch all week.

I drink water and plain unsweetened ice tea all day long.

I eat a protein-rich breakfast. every day. For me, at least, it's absolutely essential - eggs, turkey bacon. But also fresh tomatoes and all kinds of different fruits. Keeps me going gangbusters all the way to lunchtime, and those doughnuts and other junk at the office don't tempt me one little bit!

Some less healthy things - like pizza, barbecue, and chocolate, that are my favorites, I still have, but not in large, binge-like portions, and not too often. I have a pre-set amount, and then if I'm still wanting more food, I goo have some fruit or veggies.

I eat a protein-rich breakfast. every day. For me, at least, it’s absolutely essential – eggs, turkey bacon. But also fresh tomatoes and all kinds of different fruits. Keeps me going gangbusters all the way to lunchtime, and those doughnuts and other junk at the office don’t tempt me one little bit!

Some less healthy things – like pizza, barbecue, and chocolate, that are my favorites, I still have, but not in large, binge-like portions, and not too often. I have a pre-set amount, and then if I’m still wanting more food, I goo have some fruit or veggies.
