BIOGRAPHY:

Melanie Calvert Benton, (aka) “Dahlia Patton” is a retired respiratory care practitioner who now works with her first loves, photography and writing. While running a successful photography business for years, she only recently turned to writing a novel through the urgings of her husband Western Fiction Writer W.R. Benton. Melanie’s photography has appeared on the covers of all four of Mister Benton’s "The Drum Series" and soon will be gracing her own books. Her first historical novel, "A Southern Moon Rising," was released in July 2008.

An avid outdoorswoman, she enjoys C. B. radio, deer hunting, fishing, camping, and of course, outdoor photography. She prefers the smell of wood smoke, the crackling of a fire late at night, and the serenity of nature, to a fast-paced life in a big city. Born and raised in Mississippi, most of it on a farm, she is a true Southern Belle.

my VN interview

How did you get to where you are now?

Hard work and plenty of failures. I am not a quitter. Only by sheer will power and the grace of God, have I climbed out of the rut I was in and apllied myself. Now, it's paying off. if not for the help of God and my Christian upbringing, I may not have made it this far.

How do you see yourself differently now than you did 10 years ago?

Yes, much more mature and knowledgeable about many things.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In a log cabin out on about 75 acres of prime woodland. Some place I can do my photography and writing while waiting for a good deer to come along. Pasture land and a barn for critters..LOL

a postcard to my younger self

 Dear Melanie,

You are ten years younger than me and desperate for something to come along and change your life. Fear not as the Good Lord has many good things planned for you. Don't listen to the people who want to drag you down, try to stay positive, do good things and share with those who do not have anything. You will be rewarded for your good heart.

Remember what Granny always said "You can do anything you want, as long as you put your mind to it." climb those stairs, even if you are tired and knees hurt. Sit down and rest until you can climb some more. You will get there.

my role models

W.R. Benton, Paul Ott Carruth, Kevin Costner, mostly our heavenly father.
