Smese

Born in So Cal, came to adolescence during surfer/hippie/green early 70's.

coming from Oklahoma women who married young and had their babies young, I almost felt an old maid when i married at 18. I was the first woman to have married that late on my mothers side of the family. I was the first woman to have her first child out of her teens, the first woman to graduate high school and the first woman to go to and graduate from college.

But don't get me wrong: i come from smart, energetic, capable, strong wonderfully loving and funny women.

I bless every day I have had with them because they gave me what no amount of schooling could: an earthy take on the world and a good healthy dose of common sense.

I married a few times, the last one lasting 22 years,  had a couple of great kids ( Lucas is married to Jen, lives near Austin and works with kids with emotional difficulties, Zoe is a neurobiologist in San Diego, and lives with her amazing Robin there)

I have been a gypsy journeying on my own for the last decade.

I have spent a goodly portion of my life working with kids at risk and families. Parenting support educator, youth worker, owned a bookstore, a restaurant. The one thread was the joy of new people and new experiences, the loveliness of our commonality and all our textured differences.

I read for Theology at Heythrop College and got a degree in Philosophy of Religion in London when i was 44. It was during my divorce and my darling Ex remains one of my closest friends mostly because he stayed around to help me remember i could do it myself and left when i needed him to.

aafter graduation, I promptly went travellin.

I worked with L'Arche in The UK for three yeas, living in community with people with learning disabilities and going through the transformation of my life.  wow. that was amazing.

After ten years on my own, I met my beloved Andrew there and now we are off on a new adventure.

On my way to Peru to teach english...

My mom told me that these would be the best years of my life, but i was 42 and just wandering around in my soul.. but I didn't believe her at the time.

Hey, Mom! you were so so right!

my VN interview

How did you get to where you are now?

took a lot of chances, loved hard when it was in front of me, believed in my gut instincts when everyone was preaching head stuff.

Had great grandparents, tremendously courageous parents, and have accumulated the most amazing bunch of friends from all over the world

the people who taught me the most were the people who weren't trying to. like my kids..:)

How do you see yourself differently now than you did 10 years ago?

God Yes!! hahahahaha.

i love me now, i wasnt so sure back then.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

haven't a clue and that is really exciting to me.

on my way to south america to teach english with my lovely British man.. heavenly

a postcard to my younger self

Dear Sarah,

wow, you should see this place! its amazing. Can't wait for you to get here. I dont have much time, but i wanted to tell you three things to remember:

One: you are amazing and full of beauty and you can do anything you can dream of.

Two: you have nothing to be afraid of. The universe is holding you and loving you every moment.

Three: (this is very important) Don't throw your pearls before pigs, its a waste of good pearls and it pisses off the pig.

This is more important than you could ever imagine!!

my role models

wow. my Grandmother for her encompassing unconditional welcome and love of all people no matter what they had done or where they had been. My mom, for choosing hard things to make us safe. My daughter for her wisdom and truth and independence.

My wonderful friends, Brenda Jo, Mary, Becky, Michelle, Renee, Marceline, Idalee, and my younger friends; Caroline, Anja, Amber, Fiona.

The men in my life who loved women as they are and are not afraid of their power: My Grandad, my Dad, my Son.
