Charlotte Denny Henley

I am vibrant 62 year old, completing my first book called Whole Weigh.  I decided when I was 58 years ago that I didn't want to die with the music still in me, (One of Wayne Dyers quotes), so I got busy writing.

I am originally from New York and Chicago, but lived most of my life in Canada where I worked in health promotion for several organizations. I was also a lecturer in physical education, and a trainer in active living.  I moved to South Dakota 13 years ago and was a college professor for 10 years until the school closed.  That was 5 years ago.... I had to find new pathways for personal growth and satisfaction.

I have two sons, and a wonderful husband.  I currently live in a rural town in South Dakota which is quite a contrast from metropolitan living, but I have adapted quite well.

I am currently a speaker, trainer, and facilitator.  I love group processes that involve lots of people sharing ideas, like World Cafe, Open Space and Appreciative Inquiry.  I have so many ideas rolling around in my head that I often get lost and sidetracked... I can easily lose my focus.... but I am passionate and usually get things done.

I am full of life, working hard to avoid all the sterotypes of getting older.  I walk/run in nature and cemeteries for exercise.... I just got my first tattoo... a shamrock for my Irish roots and I'm nearly finished my first book and wish to build a career around it.

my VN interview

How did you get to where you are now?

There was no grand plan. I just met life as it came. I tended to be interested in sports and dance when I was young. My sweet Mother Mary who was widowed when I was 6, sent me to June Taylor School of Dance, dramatic lessons, and summer camp in the Catskills. She did this on a waitresses salary. Her efforts gave me the tools for my career.

After I had my two children, I went back to school and got a degree in physical education and then just took advantage of every opportunity that presented itself along the way. I worked for the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, for ParciopACTION and at a University.

I am currently living in a small rural communitiy in South Dakota and finding my way, after the University where I worked closed. Writing a book, became my driving force.

How do you see yourself differently now than you did 10 years ago?

I am more at peace and self-aware. My spirituality has grown and I feel a connection to Universal Energy. I am stilll on my journey, and anxious about the publication of my first book.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I will be travelling around the country, with the message of my book and others I have written and also with the message of... it's never too late. I want to inspire women who may have not fulfilled their dreams to get started and Dream Big.
