Born to feuding parents, I was with my mother alone until I was four, then lived with my grandmother, who raised me, partly I believe to make up for having abandonded her daughter, my mother, when she was a little girl. Beautiful, strong minded, argumentative, and smart, these women fought each other all their lives while I watched, giving me plenty of fuel for my future career as a therapist and writer!
I live in the Berkeley area of California now, have three grown children, and three grandchildren. My passion is helping people to heal their own traumatic pasts, and helping them to become all they can be. I have been a therapist for the last 30 years, and in 2008 I started the National Association of Memoir Writers, building on my ten years teaching and training people in memoir writing. My new book The Power of Memoir has been released from Jossey Bass publishers.
